Which is the better choice in flower beds and tree beds?

I think the cedar might be a better choice due to it being more bug resistant.

I prefer the cedar mulch. Texas natives brand is really well shredded. It's smells better too. The hardwood has a tendency to smell more earthy and decomposed. The cedar keeps its aroma for about a week and anytime it's raked

I prefer pinebark mulch due to the lower pH, then cedar.

cedar lasts longer. Usual hardwood mulch will decompose quicker. Pine bark tends to float away in heavy rain. I prefer hardwood mulch. If you are adding mulch every year, I think hardwood would be best.

I have been using cedar and have been quite pleased. I had been using hardwood mulch and ended up getting inundated with artillery fungus which was a PITA. It left those little tar balls all over my automobiles and hardyplank which made my life miserable. Cedar is artillery fungus resistant.

Cedar or cypress. Forego hardwood.
