New home and putting in some flower beds and walking paths.

Which is your preference for lawn edging and why?
( and we're staying away from stone blocks)

And which brand of product did you use and would recommend?

Thanks all

I've always used metal. Get 4" steel edging from a local steel company. It's harder to work with and probably cost more but heavier duty and I like the rust color it becomes. You could paint it though if you don't want the rust.

Something to consider if you have large dogs. We had metal edging at one point but I pulled it all out. The Great Danes were cutting their paws on it chasing squirrels.

I have put in quite a bit of this bender board at my property and have been overall pleased.

I prefer this heavy duty plastic style over the metal.

I'd be happy to share some pictures if that is of any help.

Metal will rust and eventually get sharp, but last longer than anything but stone / concrete edging.

The plastic will last shorter and is more brittle so has all the same problems of breaking and getting sharp.

If you can't afford concrete pavers or stone and want something that lasts, go metal. If it's short term stop gap, plastic is fine.

I can't speak to pricing because it is just what our builder used, but bender board is great stuff. Basically the convenience of plastic w/the sturdiness of metal. No sharp edges and after 5 years shows no signs of falling apart in the sun.

You could just do a shovel cut aka spade edge and not have edging.
Stay away from the black plastic edging, it's trash.

Composite benderboard will stretch and shrink with temperature change causing headaches.
Difficult to impossible to keep a straight line if that is your layout, very good on curves. Use extra stakes.

Steel, there are multiple thicknesses available. Don't do anything less than 1/8" thickness. You can buy with a rolled top that won't cut your feet, you may have to hunt for it.

1/4" steel is great as previously mentioned, but you need to custom weld it. We do this all the time. Pricey with the labor involved.

We have bought edging. Planter boxes etc from them in the past. Takes a couple months for the raw steel to rust

I second the live edges. We just ripped out the metal edging recently and went that route. A lot easier to mow and weedeat and should help keep the Bermuda out of the flowerbeds a bit better

I was going to make the same post agreeing with Apache.

I did this recently kind of by happenstance. I had old crappy metal edging around a big bed of oak trees and Asian jasmine in my backyard and ripped it out one day in frustration with the idea that I would replace it with something like the benderboard. Well that never happened and I just kept edging it every time I mowed and really prefer the natural look. Really easy to maintain, too.

I have found the plastic will warp, badly in some brands, from heat. And I live in Colorado

Can you post a picture of what you're talking about? I hate the Bermuda constantly creeping into my mulch, such a pain to pull. Feel like it spreads underground sometimes.

This is almost a week past-due for edging. I did not edge last week when I mowed.

Ensure you have rounded corners on metal edging. Six year old got 7 stitches from running around a friend's backyard bare foot.
