This assumes you're putting enough water on the grass. The dead grass patches makes me think it can potentially be under watered or overexposed to some form of fertilizer/weed killer.
Widespread yellowing if you're watering appropriately most likely means chlorosis. Your soil is too alkaline to uptake iron and turn the chlorophyll a nice dark green.
Get some chelated iron, 6% EDDHA, put it in a sprayer and spray it on the grass. If the grass greens up in 3-4 days its chlorosis. But you're not done yet as spraying only short term helps, you need to get more chelated iron into the dirt to assist with future iron uptake.
Also, have you put any fertilizer down on the lawn lately?
