We have about 100 feet of new dock walkway we need to illuminate. There are a ton of options but has anybody had success with any brands in particular?

I have used this brand on my house and another for years now. They work great. I use the dim at night mode where they switch to bright when motion detected. They are cheap to replace if they ever die but I have yet to have any die on me, just deteriorate from long exposure so i replaced them every couple years. They are on sale for around $5 a light right now after taxes.

Depending on height you can place them, 1 every 10'-20' or so is plenty of light for walking around at night even before motion is detected.

So these would mount on the side of the dock opposed to the top correct?

Do you see any benefit one over the other ?

Did the screws provided seem ample to secure these down? I'm not opposed to getting bigger screws if needed but want to make sure there is enough room in the holes provided if that's untimely needed

Been doing this for decades down a 100yd driveway from mailbox to front door area.
#1 all time: no longer sold fresh on Amazon for $, now only on eBay for $$$ & not so fresh? IDK
Over 3 years faultless, even after cloudy days, dusk-dawn DIM, then motion activated BRIGHT
some still going 5-7 years ...
https://www.ebay.com/itm/170926236095 Frostfire 16 LED Solar

#2 similar going on 2 years testing ... not expecting performance to surpass the #1
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B095SCQJJW?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_10&th=1

#3 a new trial just begun; cons - plastic, shorter ON cycle than most .... pros - EZ to mount, very bright ... hopeful

Too bad you don't have an AC/DC string lighting option yet
Gotta draw since me got no grammar

They illuminate forwarded, downward and outward in 180 angle so its a very good coverage of light. They are very easy to install. Top mount i dont thunk would provide nearly as much light on the critical areas for walking. These would still be plenty of light above railing height for activities like fishing, especially if you put a set across from each other at each segment you put lights on. I have never had one even get close to coming off wall due to the mounting mechanism they use and i get winds running down the side of my house where 2 are mounted that has gotten upwards of 60mph before.

Another option is to run low voltage landscape lights along entire run and back to a deep cell battery powered box with solar panels to charge it during day. Each light usually only uses like 1-5 watts so a traditional deepcell with 1k+ watt hours should be plenty to last each night. Your low volt timer should have a dusk to dawn setting to use.

For example, say you put 10 small 1w lights down each side, 20w of draw while on. You get 50+ running hours on full battery. So as long as you get some sun most days this should work forever. These types of lights and the wiring are made to last many many years and there are much better lighting and design options of the lights. So many to puck from on Amazon, HD and Lowes.

Setting up a solar power deepcell box is extremely easy as many hunters do it for cameras on leases. Locking dry box with ventilation as batteries can off gas, drill a few holes and run you wires through and silicon caulk the hole after.

If theft of the battery is a concern, pull it out when you leave and simply hook it back up when you get back.

I use these same lights on my mailbox on a street with no lights.

They work well and I am just now having to replace them after 2 years of operation.

Since it is a masonry mailbox, I just use double sided tape to install.

I used a quick connect set like this for my trolling motor deep cell battery box hookup in my kayak. It would make setup/takedown much easier if you plan to for the box rather than having to open it up and deal with wingnuts every time.
