I live in North Dallas, my home is a late 70's build, pier/beam, appx 2800 sf, single story.
In past years with cold events, I've adhered to leaving cabinet doors open underneath ALL sink faucets, regardless of them being against an exterior wall, and dripping the faucets. I've never had any frozen lines.
But, I've read comments online from neighbors stating that they're going to turn their water OFF at the city connection, and it's got me reconsidering my previous strategy.
If I were to shut the water off, drain my lines and leave taps/ball valves open to prevent pressure build up, I "guess" that lessens the threat of a water leak in-line? Where I get caught up is thinking that once I shut the lines OFF, and once the temps have established well below freezing for a few hours, that things like running the kitchen sink and showering will be a NO GO until temps return above freezing. Is that accurate?
Should I stop overthinking it, and be vigilant about checking any water lines for the next few days and keep doing what I've had success with in the past? Or, should I shut water off altogether?
