I'm planning to install a mini split in my MBR to supplement my existing HVAC system, as the MBR doesn't get cool enough in the summer. I have a U-shaped home and the MBR is at the furthest point from the air handler. The system is slightly undersized for the size of the house, and we don't have sufficient return air from the MBR. My choices are to break off the MBR suite from the rest and install a new system using that ductwork, or to add a mini split. The mini split will be less than half the cost of a new system. So to my question…

The wall we need to install the mini split on is the wall that our bed headboard is on, and rearranging the furniture isn't a good option. Is there anything about that arrangement that I should be concerned about (e.g. condensation dripping onto the bed, etc.)? Any other concerns about using a mini split for this situation?

I suggest looking into the ceiling mount mini splits. I have not done it yet but it is the only way I have gotten my wife to entertain the idea of a supplemental system for our bedroom. She did not want an "ugly" AC unit above our headboard.

This. Assuming the house is single story, it would be a fairly simple install. They make rectangular units that fit between the ceiling joists and only stick out maybe a couple of inches from the ceiling.

I'd love to use a ceiling cassette, but I have a semi-vaulted ceiling in a '73 house with a relatively flat pitched roof. As a result, I don't really have room for a ceiling mount, which requires ~2 feet of vertical clearance above the ceiling.

All things water leak and best if leaking down the wall behind sleepers than above + easier to fix.
DIYs report the most leaks and must also fix it DIY,
while pro installs and DIY regular maintenance leaks are similar to window AC units ... few - if any at all.

We always get deserved critical UGHs but maybe the below version is a solution & the future?

If there are no Mini-techs worth a darn in your area, many get cheaper DIY summer-only relief from LG/better window ACs that are disposable yet last many years. Most can do a MBR on existing 110v/15a power jacks.

Harsh winters? Buy for it an exterior hood + interior large pillow or better.

I don't know code/permitting rules but I have two in rooms with square ceiling mini-splits and both have less than 2 foot clearance (1969 low ceiling house). They were installed by professionals and passed College Station permitting so at least here it is ok.

I and my wife love them. Wished I had done the whole house. The square ones throw the air from all 4 sides so those rooms get nice even air flow. And they are almost flush with the ceiling so very low profile. We get tons of compliments on them.

One of them sits in middle of kitchen. Never had a drop of water in 7 years.

If you have any way to do ceiling cassette I would make it happen. Probably the best home item I have ever done.

The vaulted ceiling is an issue. However, the one-way cassette is less than 8" tall. It would barely stick up past the ceiling joists.

Not sure if it's an option for your room but we got an inverter (same tech as mini-split) window unit for our master bedroom and it's worked great. They make a few different ones but we got the Midea U from Costco for around $300 on sale. It did have a recall they sent me some parts for, not cooling related, but I'm sure they have updated them by now.

Thanks, but we don't have any windows in the room…just a sliding glass door.
