Our garage door is wood/composite. Wanting to paint it because we are going to sell our house soon.

The current paint is faded but doesn't have any paint/ wood chips coming off.

Would it be ok to just paint it? Or anything we need to do or put on first?

If you just throw a coat of paint on, it will look a lot better but far from perfect. I realize you are selling soon, so minimal expectations; one quart of paint, an hour or two of work and you're done.

To do it right, you would want to lightly sand it (220 grit to clean and scuff), dust/wipe off, prime, and two top coats. But at least triple the time.

My dad used to make me (and he did it as well) wash the wood with TSP (Tri Sodium Phosphate), some bleach and warm water with a stiff brush.

Knocks off junk/dirt, kills mold and would allow for clean painting on wood surface.

Might do two coats just to make sure you get an even color across the door. Would hate to paint two sections and have them look two different colors.

If going to paint it, which I agree needs to be done, I would suggest removing (prior to painting) the accessory hardware badging - pass look.

Yea I plan to take it off and paint it a dark gray probably.
