I have a bolt on a commercial meat grinder/mixer that's stripped so much that the nut got stripped as well and won't tighten. I bought a new nut this morning but I can't get it past the part that's stripped. Any recommendations? I need this working ASAP. Thanks!

I can't imagine that those wouldn't have been stainless on commercial kitchen equipment. Looks like you can get to the back side to replace both the nut and bolt? I'd get stainless and then look for whatever they use for food safe antiseize as stainless can gall.

I assume you'll have to re-die those threads. It's hard as hell to cut a bolt with boogered threads without leaving an orphan crest to just get it cross-threaded again.

If you don't have a handyman with a tap-and-die kit, use your nut to pick the right diameter and pitch. You can get a kit at Harbor Freight pretty cheap.

As Dobro mentioned, get yourself a die with hex flats on it and try to clean up the threads.

Don't worry about a die wrench, because with that center projection in the way, it probably wouldn't fit.

Alternatively, from my 'shade tree' department:

If the new nut will thread on at all, just stack a bunch of washers under it so you can get pressure on the part you are trying to tighten. You could also cut a piece of tubing (say copper) and put that over the messed up part instead of the washer stack.

Again, that's shade-tree, but sometimes when I've been under pressure I resort to such things until I can fix it 'right,' if at all.

Good luck.

No easy and quick fix but I'd use my thread chaser on that. A die will be tough in situ like that and if you manage to get it started and it's not square then you'll dick up the good threads too. That said, if the threads are that bad they may need to be recut a that will require the die.

I've had some luck fixing a couple threads like that with a small triangle file. You just need to clean it up enough to get the threads to catch. Use some lube when trying to thread the nut on after.

You might even be able to grind the end of the bolt off if you don't need the full length .

You could also try a thread cutting nut.

Cut off the end of the bolt and clean up the new last thread with a file.

Thanks guys. I used a die and was able to easily rethread the bolt. Had no idea you could do that. Pretty cool tool!

Hold up is this the mixer you bought that needs three phase power? Did you get that installed at your house?

Keep that in mind the next time someone says "we'll make it work". The right tool for the job makes all the difference!! Glad you got it fixed up!

Ha. Yes I bought it at auction for $3,000 about 7 years ago because it was a really good deal. They retail over $30K I believe. I let it sit in my garage until a few months ago when I got a little shop set up to make meat sticks and custom sausages as a side job/hobby. Just now dialing everything in.

Needs it up and working ASAP!!!

Sorry, the urgency in the OP combined with that admission in your last post cracked me up! Glad you got it working!

Bought it many years ago because I hoped to use it for a future business. That future business is now which has caused the urgency.
