I am in the process of accepting a job which would move me from Houston to the San Antonio area. My new job would be located on Mission Rd . near the interesction 10 & 37 and I am currently looking for suggestions for decent areas to live that would be within 15-25 min of the area. I am trying to keep it at or preferably under $1000. Any help & insight is appreciated.

The thread above is great info. If you post some more details of what you are looking for you will get some better feedback.

Can you elaborate on what kind of details you are looking for?

To add I'd like to rent initially while I settle into the new job. Also single guy so 1br apt is what I am currently looking for to start off with unless there's a great deal out there that I haven't uncovered yet

I found some nice one bedroom tow homes for 600-800 a month in the Med center area. I'm in castle hills and pay $915 for a two bedroom duplex. I needed a yard for my dogs

Cherry can you point me in the direction of the town homes you were talking about? I'd be interested in them.

This was in July. I went on trulia and checked the listings daily. Once you find something good you need to move on it. Nice rentals go FAST. Have your deposits ready to go. I gave them my checks before they actually approved me (went back and forth because of the dogs) the place I'm in now went on the market on a Wednesday. I happened to be in town that day. Looked at it and threw money at them that day

How important is living in or having:
Trendy part of town?
Walking distance to nice bars?
Easy parking?
Convenient grocery shopping?
Convenient shooting ranges?
Top tier gyms?
Pets?
Nicer amenities?
Any & all other things you care about?
Would you rather pay $800 for a 1BR & a 20 minute commute or $950 for a 1BR & 10 min commute w/in walking distance of where you will go at night?

Personally were I a single guy willing to spend up to $1K, I would look in South Town, down town, & uptown. Specifically in the "Arts District" near Blue Star Brewing co. down town around the children's hospital or Alamo Dome, or uptown near the old Pearl brewery. Depending on what you want I can recommend specific buildings.

Finally I love the West Gate apartments near the Pearl. Aggie owned & I am friends with the owner & manager so I am biased. Old building with older amenities & some sketch neighbors on the street but a two bedroom "town house" style two floor appt w/washer & dryer & two reserved covered parking spaces was $800 a month. Plus the manager helped me do work on my project car.

I manage my own rental properties & this is 100% true. I have had new tenants lined up the same day I list places. It is an owners market right now.

Alright here we go.
1. Trendy doesn't really matter to me but I do like places with relatively modern interiors.
2. Bar proximity is a not a big deal. Would rather uber to places like this than be close to them.
3. Easy parking is a must. I have a F250.
4. Would like it to be relatively close to groceries within 5-10 min would be adequate.
5. Have a personal gun range 40 min to the south at my parents place.
6. Good gym would be nice as I am currently a member of lifetime fitness.
7. No pets
8. The only amenities I really want is a washer/dryer in the rental. A balcony/ outside access would be nice.
9. Walking distance is a non factor to me. I am used to driving every where because of Houston.

Isen,
Looks like some of the real estate crowd has logged in so they will probably have better information that I. The area you are moving to is near King William which is a very popular but pricey neighborhood. They will have some of the modern interior stuff but it will be in excess of $2/sqft. If you don't care about driving the Med Center area is probably your best bet for budget with modern interiors. Being right there at 10 would make it about a 15-20 min commute. Another option is to go up 37 and onto 281 to get into the Monte Vista, Olmos Park, Alamo Heights area. You may not get the modern that you are looking for but it is a great area with the rest of the amenities you are looking for. It is a little closer than medical.

Isen, check out liveatbrackenridge.com. Rent is a little over what you're wanting but it fits all your other criteria.

I'll second everything Cherry said (we live in the same area of town). I'm renting at FountainHead Apartments for $645/mo. Gated, easy parking, gym on site (although I go to Gold's Gym which is a 5 minute drive right down Callaghan), washer/dryer combo in the apartments, quiet complex. Nothing fancy (obviously, given the price), but I haven't had any complaints. Needed someplace cheap while trying to find a house to buy.

Congrats on the job! Hit me up when you make it here and we'll go catch some Spurs games or sumn. This is my favorite city to live in.

It has been a whirlwind day for me as I was set to call the HR rep at 9:30 this morning to accept the position and my current boss came in at 8 to let me know that I was being laid off (oil& gas) so its definitely been a roller coaster. Currently I have accepted their offer and have completed the drug test and gave information for the background check so hopefully in a week or two I will have a job again. As for living arrangements I will probably opt for my current apartment's sister site in San Antonio this way I only lose $250 vs $2250 for breaking a lease. tbird would definitely like to hang out, I will send you a pm when I get situated in SA.

Excellent timing all things considered.

Best of luck.

My neighborhood is real unique. 1000000+ on one side. 110000+ on the other. Im in the middle. Does wonders for property value.

I should say middle in the neighborhood, not price range. Very affordable.
