Any recommendations for Lasik providers? Anything to look for or stay away from in a provider?

Using Parkhurst Nuvisiom on Friday. So far I've liked working with them in the pre-op side.

Can't beat Parkhurst. Did LASIK on our son in 2017 and refractive lens exchange on my wife at that time. She went from 20/600 to better than 20/20. I had done LASIK in Houston in 2000 but did monovision where dominant eye corrected for distance and other for near. I have very uneven astigmatism in the dominant eye so was never great. Parkhurst did cataract surgery on non dominant in 2021 and put in a trifocal lens. I read the smallest print, see computer screen and 20/20 distance. Couldn't be better.
I would see (no pun intended) him every year or so about my other eye. He kept saying that he didn't have a lens that would work. The technology keeps evolving so went in a year ago and he implanted a Light Adjusting Lens. Unlike most vision correction where you wake up and can see, I had to wait 5 weeks for the eye to heal. Then I went in and they used UV light to adjust the prescription INSIDE THE EYEBALL! I had three adjustments and then a final lock in. The only issue was that since they use UV light to adjust the script, I had to wear clear or tinted UV blocking glasses (they gave them to me) until the final lock-in. (Don't want ambient UV light to screw up the surgery). For most who have been wearing glasses, this would not be a big deal but I had not worn since 2000 and hated wearing glasses.
Parkhurst went to Hillsdale College, then NW Medical school. Went into the Army for several years (Walter Reed?) before starting his practice in SA. What sets him apart is how everyone in the practice is on the same page of the hymnal. Most Doctors know the medical but don't have the organizational skills to plan a trip to the bathroom. That is not the case with his practice. He opened another office in New Braunfels for simple procedures like LASIK but the more involved are done on Datapoint.
If you go, tell them I recommended. They need to start paying me commissions on all the patients I've sent them

I did Parkhurst NuVision a few years ago and it went great. My buddy an Optometrist said they were the best.

I would literally recommend almost anyone over both Parkhurst and Starck. They do not care if you are a bad candidate or not, they will perform LASIK on anything that can fog a mirror and will attempt to upsell you on BS along the way. Only Manrique is probably worse.

Don't be surprised if you don't actually see any of those doctors or speak to them during the pre-op or postop periods.

Rules for LASIK:
1. Don't go to any place with "LASIK" in the name
2. Don't go to any place that advertises on TV or the radio
3. Don't see a doctor who feels he is above doing your preoperative evaluation or postop visits

If I was having LASIK in SA, one of the doctors I would trust to give me an honest opinion would be Scott Thomas at San Antonio Eye Center.

Thanks for the reccomedations and the details about Parkhurst. I had a buddy who got his done at Parkhurst too. Will check them out.

I go to Starck's practice (Ultravison) for my annual eye exam (I live in Leon Springs). So I did just get a consult at his place. I noticed he did a residency at Harvard. Seemed pretty good, reasonable price ($6,700). Good to know he's been recommended a bunch too.

When we went for our son's LASIK, Parkhurst did pre-op exam and procedure itself.
When my wife went for her RLE, Parkhurst did pre-op exam and procedure itself.
When I went for my left lens implant, Parkhurst did my pre-op and procedure itself. He refused to do anything at the time on my right eye because he did not have a lens for my uneven astigmatism. He mentioned the IC-8 lens as possibility which was still awaiting approval. When it was approved, he did not push it because he wasn't convinced it would help.
When I finally went for my Light Adjusting Lens pre-op, he was involved and of course in the surgery.

Doesn't sound like a Doctor who is chasing the money. Admittedly, his practice has grown so he can't be involved with every patient, but I reiterate my statement about the culture he's established. Everyone I've dealt with in either office has been professional and focused on service. I repeat my statement the most doctors, who may be outstanding medically, have limited organizational skills.

Example, been waiting for communication from interventional cardiologist and cardiology surgeon for over three months regarding the proper operation for my wife's heart valve replacement. Call their offices, only get voicemail, and no one returns the calls. These are very highly rated surgeons in San Antonio. Again, looks like they are great on medical but don't have the leadership or organizational skills to organize a trip to the latrine.
