Wanting some information or answers on this please. My wife is about to come back from her 180 day deployment in the next month or so. I am wondering what the process, requirements, likelihood etc is of me getting deployed for contract work the next time she gets deployed.

Say she gets deployed may 2014 til November 2014 and I would try and go June 2014-December 2014. What is the likelihood of going around the same time frame?

She said you can make anywhere between 75,000-200.000 for a 6 month deployment. .??

What types of jobs are there? I have a degree is recreation parks and tourism and another in health and kinesiology.

I guess that's it. Thanks guys!

Not sure if much has changed, but I went as an IT contractor in fall of 2010 and the pay was pretty good. A lot of time the pay is dependent upon your job skill and how hard it is to find people to fill the role. Finding skilled IT geeks willing to go to the desert is pretty tough, so the pay is higher.

The hard part for you would be finding a job to fill. What's been your work experience here in the states. Also, do you have any sort of medical condition? You didn't mention it, but would you be trying to go to the same base as your wife?

Might be tough depending on what base she gets. If it's one of the bigger ones you might not have trouble. I think the biggest hurdle you will have is finding a job role. For the menial stuff the contract companies hire from 3rd world areas.

There's one website I've found and that's http://www.dangerzonejobs.com, but I don't know much about it, and you have to pay to join. DynCorp is one of the bigger contractors over there http://www.dyn-intl.com.

Also look up Fluor. They have tons of contracts. It might be tough to just sign up for one 6 month trip. I've got a buddy who's a firefighter and he waited over a year for his slot to open. If he wasn't ready to go they would've passed right on by him.

You could find work through Fluor to work in the MWRS, however most of those jobs go to Paks and Indians. They dont have 6 month contracts though. The probability of being on the same base/FOB is very slim.

My base uses firm called CKGS--it's a joint venture between CH2M Hill and KBR. Among other things, they manage the DFAC, Rec Tent, Library, etc. You might check CH2's website and/or KBR (as mentioned). Seems like they have a lot of turnover though--and I believe they want people to sign on for 12 months.

I will tell you that pay rates are being pushed down by widespread changes from "Cost Plus" to "Firm Fixed Price" contract vehicles. There was also a serious downward movement of salaries after the military left Iraq (lots of people available so the supply of labor was UP). Now, outside of Afghanistan, you're probably looking at ~$70K for 12 months with your stated skillset (which sounds like MWR/Rec). Salaries are higher in Afgh with danger uplifts. Of course, most or all of your pay would be tax free if you follow the rules.
