Uniforms I have worn

As I near the end of my military career, I am remembering all the cash I shelled out for various uniforms. Starting with my cadet years at TAMU...

As a cadet:

Note: replace tapes and patches with subdued ones. Remember doing outfit runs in the pants with your combat boots and outfit t-shirt?

As a LT:

Got to wear these the last two years they were authorized. We should go back to these.

LT through MAJ (to include 2x to Houduras and Bosnia 1998)

Note: this included the 'elvis' style

Iraq 03-04

Iraq 08-09 - MAJ through present

Afghanistan 11-12

I like the current one. Is the whole army going to that uniform?

What rank are you, if you don't mind me asking? Interesting who all posts on texags.

jock: That was our fatigue uniform. We called it the pickle suit. Like I said, replace the patches with subdued ones and that is what we worn (1982-1986).

Mameluke: I am a LTC.

Absolutely hated the pickle suit. Not s big fan of the lizard suit in Iraq. Wore the ACUs in the 'stan. Prefer the ACUs.

Regretably, you didn't get to wear the desert brush pattern.

The last set, Mulitcams, are only authorized to be worn in Afghanistan.

Oh. Well they look good, you guys should switch to those.

Multicams are good. I've read where Natick and the Army are looking over Desert Brush as a pattern for Central Asia.

Perhaps I am mistaken but I believe that the Army's reluctance to select the MultiCam pattern for all around wear is because the pattern is proprietary property of Crye Precision LLC and a royalty payment to the owner is involved. Making MultiCam the standard uniform pattern for the entire US Army in garrison and deployed could get very expensive. That may sound silly but something as intangible as the pattern of camouflage can be cost prohibitive if you pay a royalty. The disturbing thing is that internal government R&D could not come up with something as effective as Multicam (which seems to work REALLY well in a wide variety of terrain).

And some former senior army officers have a huge stake in contracts with Crye Precision. The ACU earned the lowest score for acceptable camo in Natick surveys, but because of "political" considerations it was the winner for the Army. That's just how it goes.

Very glad the buttons are coming back on ACUs and we can get name tapes and the US Army and specialty badges sewn on. Not a fan of all the Velcro. About to get issued my 1st set of multi-cam uniforms soon. I think they look sharp.
However my beef so far is that I am not able to get name tapes made on post. The AAFES approved vendor said they were not allowed to make them. Had to go off post and paid $18 for three names and two sets of SSG rank. Still need to get sew on rank for PC, boonie and other stuff sewn. Sorry end of rant.

Speaking of uniforms I've worn, the Marine Corps camouflage utility uniform did not even have name tapes or service tapes when I was commissioned in 1990, just an iron-on stencil on the left breast pocket.

I would love to see a return to the old OG 107 (Jungle Fatigues) approved for wear back in the 80's. But we won't.

Wore all of those except the multicam, my son wears it now. I like it but my favorite was the BDU.

One camo pattern I'd like to have seen experimented with by the Army is the "lizard" one worn by the Selous Scouts in Rhodesia ; Digitized of course.
