The General Assembly of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church called for yesterday to be a day of prayer on the 4th anniversary of the capture of Army SGT Bowe Bergdahl by the Taliban. He is believed to be in good health. The Taliban have released several propaganda videos of him and his family recently received a letter via the Red Cross.

Please remember him and his family in your prayers.

Google his name and some not so kind words (deserter, traitor, etc) and you will find some articles written.

This was my brigade until 2008 and the above is what I heard from buddies still with them after redeployment. I've not said much about it, and none publicly until I recently saw the newspapers were picking up on it.

He left the base voluntarily but there is nothing to suggest he is a sympathizer. Your code of conduct tells you to keep faith with our captured Soldiers. Ever make a mistake in your early 20's? Did it deserve 4+ years of captivity with the Taliban? It is well over due to bring Bowe home.

When you go off base alone, in civvies, you are not only asking for trouble, you are putting the whole theater in a crappy spot -- with thousands of people in harm's way, and millions of dollars wasted, looking for your ass.

One of several reasons COP Keating was still in place and vulnerable in Oct 2009 was that RC-East had spent two months committing a huge chunk of its lift and ISR assets looking for Bergdahl. Assets that should have been doing other things.

Does he deserve to spend 4+ years in captivity? Of course not. But he has no one to blame but himself.

That's great and all, but let's keep faith with those captured by the enemy.

What does that mean: "keep faith"?

The military is doing what it can to track his whereabouts. He is not forgotten. He is still in service -- he has even been promoted.

But that doesn't mean we should engage in mass detainee releases to secure his freedom.

Nor does it mean we can't have an honest discussion of the circumstances that led to his capture.

There are people who want to use Bergdahl as a club to beat on the military and the government, and those accusations should be addressed fairly.

Keeping faith is described by the code of conduct.
