Does a soldier receive some sort of security clearance just for being in the Army Reserve? I have heard that you do, however I am not going to trust Private Smith just because he sounds confident.

Btw, I am an enlisted 68K in the Army Reserve and will be going to IRR in September. If there is a clearance, I would like to see if I can retain it after my ETS date.

No security clearance is automatically granted for enlistment but one may be required based on specific MOS.

Every enlistee, whether active, Guard, or reserve gets a national agency check run on them at the time of enlistment but the only assumption you can make about the results of the NAC based on the fact that someone is actually serving in the military is that they had already fessed up to any past criminal offenses turned up by the investigation and were granted a waiver for them or that they did not have any arrest record. I would not necessarily equate a clean background check with a security clearance or that someone is trustworthy.

edit: Even if a job applicant claims to have a government security clearance that is not verifiable by a non-government individual or company unless they are a contractor who is attempting to hire the person being checked to work on a government contract that requires a clearance. Only in that case will JPAS be used to verify eligibility for (i.e. has the correct investigation been conducted) or assignment of a clearance. I can't even ask my government security manager to run a background check on a potential applicant for federal employment until they actually submit the federal employment applications.

Check your Army HRC page. Any clearance would be listed there. My husband enlisted in the reserves as a 68A and received a Secret clearance during AIT. It wasn't required for the MOS but they gave it anyway.

Officers should all get minimum of secret. Enlisted will generally get the clearance needed. Ask your s2 about it. They will know.

Why? My experience was you were granted a clearance "on a need to know." Why would a person be granted a clearance because of rank?

There are too many clearances out there anyway. IMHO.

I'm not sure the logic, but that is the fact. I suppose the job description for officers includes the need for access to secret information. Even as a dentist I've been in positions where I needed to access and participate in mission planning that involved needing a secret clearance. A secret clearance was required to enter the brigade and battalion toc, as well.
