Colonel (Ret.) and Mrs. Joe T. Haney celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on August 8, 2013 at Christopher’s World Grill with relatives. Col. Haney is Director Emeritus of The Texas Aggie Band.
Joe graduated from Marlin High School in 1944 and that summer entered Texas A&M and became a member of the Aggie Band. WWII was not over and he was drafted at age 18. He was sent to Korea and played in an army band, which led him to study music. Since Texas A&M did not have a School of Music he transferred to SMU where he received his B.A. in 1950 and his M.A. from Sam Houston in 1954. He directed Texas school bands in Hemphill, Calvert, Wharton, and Mexia for the next 22 years. In 1968 Col. E. V. Adams asked him to write a new arrangement for “The Spirit of Aggieland” which is still being played by the Aggie Band as is one of his published marches, “Noble Men of Kyle.” In 1972 he became the Associate Band Director at TAMU and the following year was selected as Director of the Aggie Band when Col. Adams retired. Joe retired in August of 1989.
