Any of you old Ags know how to put one together. We have one in storage we are going to piece together in the museum on Wednesday. I have a set of old TMs which great detail about pm but not so much on assembly.

It looks pretty straight forward, just want to make sure there is nothing tricky about it that a non Arty guy would not catch.

Are you just asking about the breech/firing mechanism assembly? We used them for salute detail in Korea, and my team did maintenance on them several times a month. They are pretty easy and straightforward.

It is broke down into the 6 components right now. It will not be fired, I just don't want it to fall apart or tilt forward and crush a visitor. The manual is pretty clear on the assembly, I was just wondering if anyone had knowledge of tips on assembly to make it a bit easier. We don't have a 20 year old gun crew, just 3 40 year old out of shape men putting it together.

If you're less than 75 miles away from Temple and need a 20 something year old to help put it together, I might be interesting in stopping by (if I can find the time).

Tomorrow it the big day. I will take pics and post them later on.

OP, I was involved in refurbishing an old Pack 75 a few years ago. This one was a "CP decoration" which had been demil'ed with firing lock and upper and lower sleighs welded together. Biggest challenge was separating the upper and lower sleighs after decades of holding water and rusting. Soaked in diesel for days, still wouldn't budge.

We used the wenches of two D-8 Cats pulling each sleigh opposite directions. Still wouldn't budge until we applied major heat and multiple blows with a 16 lb sledge.

Finally apart, we blasted, primed, painted, reassembled and it turned out great.

If yours is already disassembled and rust free, just follow the TM and use some standard mechanical judgement and you'll be fine.

BTW, if you want to make it into a saluting piece, there are plans available for milling a piece of round brass stock into a sleeve for a 40 MM saluting round. Assumes you have an operational firing lock, of course. Many of the old locks were welded up but some careful grinding will normally return the lock to operational status.

Good luck, and please provide updates

We finally got it put together. It took a few tries. As a grunt, I never messed with one before and no one else on staff has military experience, so most of it was up to the manual and guess work.

A few times we thought we had it together properly only discover, we had it stuck in travel position, forgot to mount the sights, trail arm out proper placement, etc....

Here are some pics of the assembly and final display.

It could use a fresh coat of paint, but not bad for sitting unassembled in the basement for 40 years.
