I thought the State Guard was comprised entirely of support personnel (no combat arms). Is that correct?

I'm reading a fictional book in which the State Guard shows up at a crisis in Austin with a couple hundred riflemen, an F-16 and two armed Apache helicopters. Do they actually have such capabilities, or is that all just made up for the sake of an entertaining story line?

key in on the word 'fictional'.

I read the wiki page before making the post above, and it describes a bunch of support functions. However, it does not definitively say that the State Guard has no combat arms component. It also does not say anything about such functions being prohibited.

TSG units are mostly MP's. Their main function is to 'guard' armories once the TxARNG units that usually drill at same are deployed (Gone). They may have rifles/pistols but probably nothing beyond that. They don't have to comply with AC/RC height/weight/APFT standards, so you get some interesting looking folks. Uniforms are different, too, hand me downs.

Kinda like comparing a deputy reserve constable to a Texas Ranger.

I've never seen a TXSG member who didn't look about 60 and at least 100 pounds overweight. Looks like your author didn't do too much homework.
