Russian aircraft carriers

I figured the Texags gurus would know the answer to this question. I saw an online news article that was discussing the Russian warships being sent to offshore Syria in case evacuation of Russian citizens is needed. I happened to look at images, one of which had 2 carriers steaming side by side. One was a typical ramp deck for jump jets, but the other was an American style angled deck configuration. Do the Russians have this type of angled deck carrier, or is it news outlets being mistaken?

According to wikipedia, Russia only have 1 aircraft carrier in service. Maybe the article was wrong and they were actually Italian. They have 2, and I believe one has a ski jump.

Thanks. I couldn't find anything definitive. I always laughed at the Austin paper showing pictures of one plane airframe and calling it something else. Even a non-pilot like me can tell it is an error. I wondered if this carrier picture was the same deal. The media is so exacting in their research, it keeps my faith in their reporting accuracy strong.

It appears to me that the "Russian Warship" on the left has F-14 Tomcats and F-18 Hornets, while the "Russian Warship" on the right has AV-8B Harriers.

It is odd to me that neither has markings, one wonders if they were Photoshopped out.

Found the image at Military Times with the caption

Didn't a political ad once show Russian cruisers, or a fleet of some type of Russian vessels? Or maybe it was a backdrop image at a political event. I can't remember.

It was in a "tribute to veterans" during the 2012 Democrat Convention. It also had the Turkish Air Force in the same composite image.

They have two carriers actually. Kiev and Kuznetsov. Kiev is quite old and used for export only from what I understand. Only one functional Kuznetsov remaining with the other one finally being finished and exported to China. They're both ski jump carriers and can launch some fairly nasty missles. Hope that cleared things up for you. Edit: Kiev is not ski jump, vstol and helos only. Not even sure they use the YaK's they once used on them.

The Harrier is the only VSTOL aircraft that has had any sort of successful combat record (which is a testament to the Brits).

Although I personally question the need for the USMC to posses a VSTOL capability (and I'm sure there are some Marines out there that will argue with me), the Russian/Chinese carriers are pretty limited in force projection capability without a VSTOL aircraft.
