Jean Thurel (6 September 1698 – 10 March 1807)was a fusilier of the French Army with an extraordinarily long career that spanned over 90 years of service in the Touraine Regiment. Having been born during the reign of Louis XIV and died during that of Napoleon I, Thurel lived in three different centuries and served three different monarchs.

Just imagine, this guy began soldiering only 20 years after the invention of the bayonet replaced the pikemen that protected the shooters while reloading their muskets. During the massive span of his military career the effective range of the shoulder fired weapon at a point target perhaps doubled from 50 to 100 yards but still lacked good rifling and the flintlock remained the state of the art firing mechanism over almost the entire 18th century with only the artillery making significant improvements in lethality and accuracy.
