Marines issue Nerf Guns

quote:
This new spot produced by a Marine Corps combat camera unit totally lampoons the government shutdown (and the sequester for that matter).

In it, the Marine Corps is feeling the pinch, so it's time to sacrifice a few things. Rifles are switched for Nerf guns, their computers for Etch A Sketches, hot meals for cold, etc.

Well NERF does manufacture a fully automatic belt fed crew served machine gun so they shouldn't miss a beat!

I am really sorry for those Marines. I know that they meant no harm by that but they are going to be shocked by the consequences. How can someone of their generation not understand that ALL digital video eventually finds its way to the WWW and the eyes of the person most likely to have an adverse reaction to it? In this case that would be Gen James Amos (who has not been in much of a joking mood this decade).

Ehh this is pretty tame. They were just making light of the shutdown, they weren't criticizing the president or any other politicians. I doubt they will get in trouble.

I didn't find it too humorous, but I don't usually subscribe to slapstick humor. I can see some of the shtick, but why would they take away stuff that's already been purchased (M16, iPad, broom, etc) because of the reduced funding?

They should be punished, but only for lack of creativity and poor execution.

I don't. The current climate in the Corps has no tolerance for jackassery that reaches public visibility (not that it ever has but even less so now). Hopefully they used their own camcorders to make the video instead of the government owned ones from the office. That alone issue alone might keep this from getting blown way out of proportion. On the other hand, all it would take is missive from a congressional staffer to the office of legislative affairs questioning whether the Marine Corps tolerated Marines publicly ridiculing politically contentious issues and the hammer will fall hard on these Marines.

Along that same line...I.e., the sequester check out this story about the Air Force sending brand new cargo planes directly to mothballs because they can't afford to fly and upkeep them...heck several planes aren't even built yet and are scheduled for the same result. Worst thing about it, the company building them is Italian so this is money we didn't award to US contractors, but wasted it on foreign contractors insteadM

Those planes were from a OEF ONS, a short-airfield cargo. They were ordered years ago, most are already delivered. Now that we're leaving Afghanistan, most are not needed. It costs more to turn off production than to take delivery of them. They aren't being demolished, they're being mothballed, and some are already being purchased by other agencies/countries/companies. It has nothing to do with reducing budgets

Misplaced manufactured rage... this is it
