Buried Saber under Kyle Field

Isn't there a campus legend that a saber is buried somewhere underneath Kyle Field from an outfit back in the 30's or 40's? Supposedly, there are 3 sabers buried at different locations on campus, and Kyle Field is one of them.

I ask this because I wonder what they will do when/if they end up digging up the saber during the renovations.

Aggie Urban Legend.

Highly unlikely.

I heard that the sabers were left in the steam tunnels and that's why we were down there. That's the story we told Bob Wiatt and I'm sticking to it.

Pretty sure any saber burried back then would completely rotten by now, leaving only part of the handle, if anything. Doubt a bulldozer would even notice it.

And one is in the water tower too...

The water tower that's been gone since 1975?

And the other place we were always told there were buried sabers (or a complete footlocker, depending on who told the story) was under the steps of the MSC. I assume the front steps, but the legend was never specific.

The field has been re-soiled since then, i'm sure if there ever was a saber buried there it is long gone. I know there used to be axe handles attached to the walls in the steam tunnels along with the outfit graffiti, also long gone by now. There is still graffiti if you ever get the chance to make your way under the quad..

Also some great 100-year-old grafitti in the space between the inner and outer dome of the Academic Building. You get there vis the spiral staircase.

As plug10AG says, Kyle has had many generations of soil and astroturf in the last 80+ years. Unless something is buried over 10 feet down, it's been dug up by now.

This thread got me wondering if there are any other good urban legends/campos out there?

I had an zip my fish year who would send us on wild goose chases all the time. The one I remember specifically was trying to find the "hidden city". In the end it turned out that all of the man hole covers on campus said city of Houston on them. Thus "hidden city". Go figure.

One legend that always got me was if there really is/was a secret society on campus...

One was that there were old outfit signs buried under the concrete at mid field when Kyle had Astroturf.

Where are the sinking sabers?

I was told that 'back in the day', branch insignia were painted on the original "Welcome to Aggieland" water tower. So the Cav sabers painted on the water tower were the "sinking sabers".

As a bonus, here's another campus water tower that is no longer with us.

I wonder if the time capsule they found during the YMCA building remodel was at one point considered an Aggie urban legend and then forgotten about.

I always heard that the sunken sabers were painted inside the old water tower.

I was told a sabre was buried the summer before Kyle Field was astroturfed. I too highly doubt it, but it's fun to spin a yarn.

I remember Traditions Council posting a question about the vanishing sabers. They never gave an answer about their whereabouts

As fish we were sometimes sent on wild goose chases to find things like, "the stairs that lead to no where" (inside the Trigon by the way)

Can't remember the other ones.

So...HBC if there are indeed steps that lead to nowhere how is that a wild goose chase?

Lost a lot of Cush over "there are three trucks on campus that have never been moved...where are they?" Finally, thought to look up the word in the dictionary since many Cush questions seemed to be trickery and got the clue we needed to answer the question. The three trucks are the decorative devices at the top of the flag poles in front of the Admin Bldg, the Academic Bldg and the North Gate Post Office!

Tip of the Quad.
Smallest Cadet.

Those are the only other two I can think of right now besides the trucks question.

Highest inscription on campus?

"General Electric" on the light poles over Kyle.
