AFROTC Question

My nephew is attending a small college in the Twin Cities. He has started texting me about joining the schools AFROTC program because he has a desire to fly.

Personally, I know that it would be good for him to get some discipline and a little direction. But I also know how tough it is to make it through to earning a set of wings.

He is scary smart and athletic so the grades and physical challenges will not be a problem.

He asked me about specific qualifications, flight requirements, and odds of being able to fly would be for the Air Force. I have told him to go talk to the ROTC instructors about this and at the same time I would ask around some Aggie Air Force guru's what would be the best path for him to follow.

So the question comes down to, what are the biggest challenges and pitfalls that a freshman will encounter while trying to gain a commission in the AF?

Scan this thread some good info there.

Good luck to him, it can be done. My daughter went USAFA instead of AFROTC, and it worked out for her.

That website is pretty comprehensive. It might be a little outdated, but overall I think it should mostly still ring true.

My son is going through the same process. I have been in the AF 21 years now and he is following my footsteps. The biggest thing is GPA and your standing amongst his peers. Freshman tend to screw around that first year and mess up their GPA. He also should start studying for the AFOQT test. This will be given to determine if he is qualified or not.
