How long do you want to ignore this user?
I am 2 years still from my DEROS here in Hawaii. I am looking towards my next job in the Army as I will need a Broadening Assignment and I want to badly go to College Station to be an ROTC instructor. I am an Infantry SFC and PSG here in 2-35 IN in Hawaii. I am at 11 years in and will have one more reenlistment but I want to try and control my assignment as much as possible. I know option one is the only option for my grade and years in. So this is not a retirement job, but a job to prepare future LT's to enter our military.

Is there anyone that can help me with this as far as what the turnaround will be at TAMU in two years? If so will there be a way that you may be able to get me a requisition when I can put in for my next assignment? I ask this because I know this is an extremely difficult job to get. Thank you.

Things that helped me:

1. A Texas A&M Aggie former student

2. Return from overseas - unaccompanied even better - to get "choice" on stateside assignments

3. Be 0-3 with Master's Degree or 0-4 to be an "instructor". Staff NCO's who do the paperwork and other duties have similar requirements but are NOT allowed to be the actual "instructors"...

4. Know the PAS or other ranking officer on Staff who will assist in pulling you in

5. Have excellent performance reports

6. Look sharp in your official photo (not kidding!)

7. Know someone in the assignments chain who can assist

Maybe not all required - but all seem to be the things I recall that helped most

Maybe I was lucky - but these are things I recall when I went to the TRIGON.

Not true for Army ROTC. Army NCOs do teach in the classroom and at labs. Having the NCO perspective is very valuable for the cadets.

Also not true for Army NCOs. No degree required for NCOs.

You need to call the Army ROTC SGM to get on his radar. It is currently SGM Sticca.

And yes...it was one of the best jobs I ever had in the Army.

call your branch manager, and see what is open for your rank and MOS. if there isnt a current opening that matches your rank and MOS, you are out of luck, as these positions arent interchangeable with regards to either of the above requirements. most, if not all, Army ROTC departments have an authorization for a 11 or 19 series NCO, so if you want to teach, i am sure your branch can work with you for an opening somewhere. and as mentioned above, Army instructors are in the classrooms for every class, and are the primary instructors for most topics, or at least mine are. for the Air Force you have to have a masters to teach, our Navy department has No NCOs, and the Marines have one, who does absolutely nothing. They have a Major who teaches foot care and hygiene, for christ sakes.

TLR- call your branch manager, as the SMSI cant do anything for you.

My bad. You are correct in that I was talking about my experience in the 70's and as Air Force. It is true we had classes in "pilot training" and PT, for instance, taught by an NCO, but not Bull Text classes. All of them were taught by Officers.
