I came across this photo on the Wikipedia entry for the FTAB:

Anyone think the amount of drapes make this cadet look ridiculous? How about a limit on the number of drapes and ribbons?

You can wear 9 medals. That guy chose to wear his extremely far apart. I've never seen then worn like that and yes it looks ridiculous.

That's crazy talk. Next thing you know the Corps will start mounting them in blocks.

Yeah, I hate that wikipedia photo, but I think that guy is one of the people that maintain the wikipedia entry on the Corps and the FTAB.

I've seen Soviet Generals with fewer medals.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the Standard has been amended to limit you to two rows. And some awards just have a ribbon, no drape/medal.

That guy looks ridiculous. Terrible PR.

Ridiculous. They should just pin each row halfway under the row above.

Or stop wearing full medals on a shirt?

Or mount medals together instead of pinning each individually, if you insist on putting medals on a shirt?

When I was in the Corps I wore my medals together on a rack. We wanted to be consistent with the rest of the Corps, but there was no official Air Force or Army guidance for wear of full-sized medals. The consensus from the bulls I discussed it with was that wearing them all loose like the pic in the OP would be an undignified way to wear them. This is what it looked like:

The only negative aspect of wearing them this way was that they jingled together from the slight overlap, but I never cared about the noise they made. I suppose they could be spaced a little farther apart to solve that problem.

Funny, I thought I was an AMERICAN General. Last time I checked, I wear US brass on my class As, and a US flag on my ACUs. I do NOT consider myself a "Mexican General" at all. I am an AMERICAN citizen, and a General Officer in the United States Army. Period. Would appreciate you remembering that. I figure after 31 years of service to the UNITED STATES, I've earned that.

You're a great American, Sir. BTW, Dave Halverson and Bob Cone told me to send you their regards if/when we spoke again

Thanks Tango Mike! Please give both my very best when you talk to them again. Both great Americans who have served our country extremely well!

Rare to wear the medals in my ancient era, but then I only had 1. Guys wore the ribbons and it was damn rare to see someone with 2 full rows of them.

I knew way too many Cadets during my time who were more concerned about ribbons and medals than anything else like the betterment of their outfits and/or subordinates. It was ridiculous.

The guy in the picture looks like an idiot. Way too much on the uniform. Reminds me of a JROTC kid.

I never liked the separation of the medals. They should be flush up against each other. And I bet there's very specific measurements prescribed in the Standard. If there's not, it needs to be addressed. A lot of cadets look like they put their uniforms together in the dark. I'd like to see uniformity across the board. One Corps, one standard. Don't even need to write up a new one. Go grab an SOP from one of the service honor guards.

Only 2 of those medals and the qualification pin are authorized. The rest are pullouts.

Also, I'm pretty sure that it's a max of 9 ribbons or 6 medals.

Tried to keep a maximum amount of ribbons/medals up and running during my time as Corps IG. We kept the same standards as listed above. Hope its still in practice....

I must have missed it but at what point did this thread become about race and disrespect?

Might be my fault. I made a comment on the old name we used for guys with lots of stuff on their shirt. It was about a country, not an ethnic group, BTW. ABATTBQ87 made what he thought was a funny, general Joe was not amused and defended himself.

I think the General had a point, and I assume they settled the matter.

On a side note, lots of we BQs had been in high school band, and thus had some hanging medals from various solo/ensemble competitions. It was not unusual to see a medal on a BQ that looked a little off, and upon closer inspection, find it was from all-region band or some such.

I may or may not have had a medal with a maroon/white/maroon ribbon and a gold triangle hanging medal that appeared on odd occasions. It was amusing to watch people try to scope it out without being too obvious.

A classmate named Howard, a great guy who was not so great on grades, showed up with an odd looking ribbon one day. He said it was the newly authorized "SchoPro" (scholastic probation) ribbon. I seem to recall he had several stars for repeat awards of the ribbon.

I reread it twice to figure out what you were talking about. It never did become about race unless you put it through the John Wiley Price filter for racial context ("Why's it got to be a black ribbon!").

If equating an individual's creative aggrandizement of a uniform is disrespectful then it became about disrespect when I posted to picture of Sacha Baron Cohen.

BTW, your saber is too long. The tip should be even with the eye at the position of carry.

With all due respect to the Commandant, the term "Mexican General" was around the quad before he was even a fish.

Useless point. It could have been invented by Cro-Magnon man, that doesn't make BG Ramirez a Mexican General.

Definitely have heard that term used in the past for someone with eight to ten rows of ribbons.

Although it appeared to me as a joke, I think the commandant took issue with him being referred to as a Mexican General, not the actual use of the term to describe someone like the cadet in the first picture.

By the way, I think the standard says you're supposed to have it to where the metal of the lower row begins where the fabric of the upper row ends. Or something to that effect.

I don't read any of what was posted to refer to BG Ramirez, so no, it's not a useless point.

The ultra-clever BQ87 deleted his comment. He knows he wasn't funny. Yes, your point was useless because you missed what the discussion was about
