Grandfather was class of '34 and unfortunately died well before I was born.

We never had his senior boots as they were handed down or sold once he graduated. However we DO have his sabre which has been displayed in my folk's house for decades.

Over the Easter holiday, I took the sabre down to inspect it and realized that the sabre itself is engraved. However it is engraved with U.S. Army insignia rather than with anything at all related to Texas A&M. Does anyone know if that was common back then? When did the sabres begin referencing A&M instead? Do they all do that now or is it up to the individual to decide what he wants engraved on his sabre?

I can't speak about what is common today, but during my time in Aggieland, there was no requirement for the saber to be an A&M sabre. I knew several who carried family heirlooms, including at least one CSA saber.

I believe the Corps Chaplain saber is an AMC sabre passdown, and if I recall correctly I was told that it dates back to the 50's.

Also, now you can buy a US Army saber for about $60 while the cheapest Corps saber is easily $200. That's why I knew a cadet or two who just bought Army sabers. The Marine contracts often carried a Mameluke.

My AMC saber was $35 brand new.

Carried a Model 1850 Foot Officer Sword. It was a blast to high port. As heavy as an RV weapon.

I carried an old M1860 Cav sabre that my Dad found in an antique store. I am pretty sure it was a replica even though it was heavy as all get out. It did stand apart from the A&M and regulation military sabers carried by most. It could run through a 55 gallon rubber trash can with ease!

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize that there was so much variation in those sabres. My son is just finishing fish year but his grandparents plan on refinishing that sabre and passing it on down to him for his senior year. To carry the same sabre as his great-grandfather is going to be a special thrill for all of us...

From a preservation side, I would refrain from refinishing it. Look into getting some curator's choice or renaissance wax to clean and protect it.

Sounds reasonable. When we get closer, we'll take it to Hollick's or someone similar and figure out what needs to be tightened or shined. It actually is in great shape already and shouldn't need much.
