That Gamma Goat would make a really nice hunting rig. They are two cycles correct? Two cycle diesel maybe?

My experience is that folks do wait to bid, but some bargains still can be had. Not lots of gamma goats built, so maybe they are desirable to collect.

Google tells me they used a 3 cylinder 2 cycle diesel....which means LOUD. Don't know how that would go down for hunting.

If anyone has a serious interest, let me know and I can take a look at them. I'm by there a lot.

IDAGG, yes, 2.6 Detroit 2 stroke. But what a miserable vehicle they were. Lots of reasons for their short military lifespan.

Years ago I had my name on one of those M151A2's. M561 Gamma Goats were POS, hanger queens and broke down most of the time. They finally got something useful in the Hummers, but it took awhile.

You can tell a M151A2 from an M151A1 easily in 2 simple ways (There are a couple of more but I digress). A) Windshield is single pane of glass on an M151A2, not divided like an M151A1, and; 2) Newer turn/blinker signal units, front and back. I had both types in the '70s back in the Jimmy Carter Army, VOLAR.

Radio mounts in a Hummer let you sit in the front seat and use/talk easily. Radio mount in a M151A1/2 series meant you had to either turn 180° on your knees on the seat to operate/change the radio OR have your driver lean back and switch stuff. Either way, while moving, not a good solution. Plus you can sleep in a Hummer. I was NEVER able to find any configuration to sleep comfortably in a M151A1/2.

Brings back memories.

I have no personal experience with M151s but the HMMWV sucks for both comfort and functionality. It may have advantages over the M151 but is is far from an ideal vehicle. I don't hold much hope that JLTV will be an improvement. It will just cost a lot more and undoubtedly spawn a civilianized version for Hollywood stars with too much money to burn and a small pecker for which they feel the need to compensate.

I don't think there will be a large Hollywood market for a civilian model JLTV. Not enough action stars left with any cojones who are willing to confront the environmental wackos.

Now if there were an electric version made by Tesla...

Back in 78 I was a young platoon leader with an M151 and 12 Gamma Goats. Loved my jeep. In fact when I was a Captain in Germany during the change over from the jeep to the CUCV (GMC Jimmy), the field grade officer in charge of the change over had to call me up and order me to turn in my jeep.

As for the Gammagoat, hanger queen is too good a word for them. If they were combat ready more than 60% of the time, you and your maintenance chief were considered miracle workers by higher command. The only time I was able to roll all 12 out at one time was during an unannounced ARTEP (thanks to some creative, non-approved maintenance fixes my motor sergeant and I came up with) and two broke down within a few blocks from leaving the motor pool (thankfully out of sight of the evaluators). Most of the rest I wouldn't have wanted to take on the open road for an extended trip.

Bid on the jeeps but let the goat go!

I drove an M151 when I was in the Army in the mid 1970s. It was a blast to drive. That was in the "hollow Army" days and parts were hard to come by. We had a wall locker in the jeep bay (padlocked) with some extra (Ahem) parts we had somehow requisitioned Mainly U Joints. If I remember correctly that thing had 12 U Joints and one was always starting to go out.

Also, I thought those things flipped so easily that they were not going to sell them surplus at the end of there useful lives. Yet here they are. Does anyone know how, or am I disremembering things this many years later?

We had Gamma Goats in our battalion, mainly in the medic platoon, but I really didn't know much about them other than they looked like they could go anywhere.

Jeeps currently at about $3400.

Goats currently around $1250.

When I enlisted in 1975 I was a medic and assigned to a Gamma Goat. It was fun to drive, the back had an insulated tarp and a heater, but they were a POS. I was later assigned as the battalion commander's drive in a M151A2. Cush job, but you are right about the radios. Brings back some good old memories.

Blue book price for the Goat should equate to moving the decimal 2 places to the left. Your memories about Jeeps flipping is correct. Back in '75 at Fort Hood our Sqdn BMO and Maint Tech flipped a jeep coming down Manning Mountain and the driver got killed. Bad day for all.

IDAGG, M151 had independent 4 wheel suspension and rolled easily. In the deep sand around the Ft Bragg DZs they rolled notoriously. As late as the 90s the policy was that they would not go to surplus sales. Running gear was to be pulled and chassis cut up and scrapped. Apparently that policy changed.

stbabs thanks. I was starting to wonder if my memory was faulty. Jeez, those suckers could go almost anywhere. Maybe I should buy one. Not much good on the road, but off road would be pretty cool.
