I have partnered up with a Junior Military Officer transition firm and was wondering how other veterans experiences with them have gone( I have been thoroughly impressed thus far). Was recently contemplating if I would be better off getting a Resident MBA prior to entering the civilian business sector. To any veterans who have already transitioned, your experiences and opinions can benefit me a great deal. Thanks in advance!

Depends which one you've partnered with. Some are good, some are ok, some are just plain old headhunters with fancy names. FWIW, I've signed with one, and all of my friends that signed with the good ones ended up with great jobs.

Do you mind sharing which ones you consider "the good ones"? That's not a smartass response either…truly wondering. Thanks.

I transitioned out of the USMC last year with Cameron Brooks into a job I love. I would be happy to discuss my experience with them. It was very professional. You will get a great job through them and it will be a position where your talents from the military are appreciated.

Also, CB is out of Fredericksburg, so they have a few Aggie ladies that help out during the process...great people.

I have partnered up with Cameron-Brooks myself. However, have since contemplated the possibly of getting my MBA prior to entering business world.

If you partner with one of these firms, does it limit your ability to apply for jobs on your own?

@henry07, I can only vouch for Cameron-Brooks because they are the firm I chose to roll with. But, when you agree to a partnership and a seat at one of their career conferences they ask you to give them first dibs/first look. After the career conference you can submit applications galore. Surprisingly, they are huge advocates of networking.

Everyone I know who went with Cameron Brooks got very good offers. They seemed to be thorough. They were tough but had folks prepared.

I consider Cameron brooks and alliance to be the top two, probably in that order

I did CB at the end of 13 and they were great. It seemed like a whirlwind to me, but they helped every step of the way. I had an MBA before I got out but I don't think it helped me get my position. My engineering troubleshooting skills got me that. The only thing I would change is I didn't end up in the location I would have liked. But I actually really like where I am and my next job can always get me my dream place. I think I would definitely get into the business world first. From everything I've experienced, the companies want you for the leadership experience. They can teach the business aspect. Leadership is harder to teach.

@oats05, I appreciate your honest feedback. I am not going to lie, it can be daunting sometimes thinking about my upcoming transition. Everything being shrouded in uncertainty, not knowing where I'll end up. Less than a year!
