Good news? Bad news? Merely interesting? I don't know enough to know if this is A Big Deal or not. Though I thought Americans traditionally resisted being under foreign command.

Not new at all. III Corps HQs at Ft Hood has had a Canadian Brigadier General as a Deputy Commander for years. It works very well.

Given USAREUR's role as a force provider for possible NATO missions in Europe, this is not an unusual decision at all. We fight as coalitions today, and as you can see from that German BG's bio, he has served as a part of ISAF in Afghanistan -a coalition force.

I don't see any problem with this at all, and I doubt anybody at USAREUR does either.

If this is a prelude to letting the Euros pay for their own damn defense, I would see it as A Very Good Thing.

Yea, I left Hood not to long ago, and the III Corps DCG there was a Canadian as well. He knew how our systems ran and pretty much seemed like he had been working with us for years.

It's better for us in the long run to have these guys embedded with us before we have to play coalition downrange.

These guys are not organization commanders...they are deputies. There are usually two, and at least one will be a US Officer and probably in charge of operations.
