We don't assign officers or enlisted according to their regimental affiliation, so is it no more than a pin to wear on one's uniform stating their favorite regiment of which they once served?

It always seems to be a way for guys to show the most "high speed" unit they've been attached to. The combat service affiliating themselves with their branch, which is not a regiment, is weird, too.

I'm affiliated with the regiment (battalion) I commanded in, because it has fond memories for me. So, yeah, outdated is pretty accurate I think.

Since we only have a handful of true regiments anymore, it really doesn't make sense. I wish the Army would go back to the regimental system instead of brigades. Take 1/1 CD and call it the 7th Cavalry Regiment, with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd battalions, 4th Squadron, and then tack on the FA battalion and support and there you go. The "old timers" used to fondly talk of their time in certain regiments, but now the division carries much more weight than a specific brigade. Or at least that is how I see it.

The army just killed off the last "pure" regiments left when they made the 3rd BN's in each BDE of the 82nd and 101st something other than the the 3rd BN's. Of course you could argue that going to the BCT concept did it as well by adding the BSTB, Fires, R/S, and BSB. But I digress. As for me, as an AMEDD Officer I wish I could join the regiment I served with, but unfortunately I have to wear the AMEDD Regimental insignia.

AEK, the only pure regiments we still have are the 2nd, 3rd and 11th Cavalry Regiments. Those brigades in the 82nd and 101st did not have all the units (combat units anyway) pure to the regiment. If the Cav squadrons had of taken on the designation of the infantry battalions, then yes, but they did not. The Ranger Regiment is still around, but doesn't have sequentially aligned companies like the Cav units.

I forgot about the SCR's. My point was with the Infantry Regiments, and I noted that the BCT killed off the "pure ness" of the regiments. I just don't understand why you would make 2-501 the 3rd BN of the 504th PIR when you could have just brought 3-504 back. Seems kind of wonky to me.

I understand your point. I am still waiting for the Army to bring back the 2nd Armored Division. I know that will never happen though.

I like at least being associated with a regiment for history...who cares if 1st BN is a recon squadron and 2d, 3d and 4th are maneuver BNs...at least the regiments have history back to 1775 etc and not a sometimes 20 year old "Brigade/BCT" history

Our regiments in AV have more to do with the regimental heraldry than BDEs, but generally they are in the same location. But officers have absolutely no leg up getting assigned to their regiment like its explained in the AR.

So, as far as I can tell, it's about where you most liked serving at one point...which I don't mind, but at least update the reg to say, 'pick your favorite unit' vs 'this is how we will assign officers'...because we don't. CSA wants us to be diverse in DIV background and not spend 8 years at Bragg (guilty).

Yeah, I'm affiliated with the 327th Infantry Regiment but if I get orders to the 101st ABN, it has no weight in what unit I go to.

Most infantrymen say that theres only one true regiment (75th)
