While it is great the Corps is large enough to overflow into the south end zone, the fish there need upperclassmen supervision. Smoking and joking during the Spirit , War Hymn, and Texas Our Texas.

Sort of related, that reminds me. When I tuned in to the Internet Audio broadcast of the game yesterday, they had just cut to the live audio feed of the FTAB playing the National Anthem. Dave South said something like we'll listen to the Aggie Band play the National Anthem. Then as soon as it was finished and the band started into Texas Our Texas, Dave South starts babbling again. I thought it was kind of funny. We won't talk over the National Anthem but Texas Our Texas can just be background music.

I know, maybe they didn't have the broadcast rights (joking).

I think its a bit weird that an 18 year old kid needs a baby sitter. On the other hand, I do think it is ridiculous that an 18 year old kid can't stand at attention for a minute. Perhaps they just need to be reminded of what to do during those times.

This has been a problem for years. When I was a 5th year senior (some 5 years ago or so) I sat behind about 100 fish, and they could not stop babbling to themselves. They didn't pass back yells, they barely watched the game, they almost never yelled during defense. And there were a few upperclassmen around them (mostly pissheads), but they didn't seem to care, and they were only marginally better. Upperclassmen usually don't correct fish unless they're in the same outfit. And upperclassmen get pissed if someone from another outfit corrects their fish, even if their fish deserved it.

I don't know about now, but back then they'd also go to midnight yell and watch their butts goofing off during the Spirit and War Hymn as well, some acting as yell leaders, some just talking with their dates, etc. So they didn't have a great example to begin with.

Never, ever had an upper classman supervise us at at football game. Mainly because we were stuck on the third deck and all the upper classmen were on the lower decks. if they are your fish, quit baby them and crap the dog s**t out of them if you don't like what they are doing at games. That's what comebys at 1600 are for.
If they are someone elses, introduce your self and then turn them into their upper classmen for double and triple pullouts. "fish shooting Zips" always works.

Are you really tattle-taling on some fish... via the internet? Find something better to do with your time.

There's a difference between tattling on fish Jones, and pointing out what sounds like a larger problem than just a couple of fish smoking and joking.

I assume you were with all the non-reg fish on 3rd deck? What was that like?

During my 5th year we pulled seats on 2nd deck twice and 3rd deck once, and those non-reg freshmen, sophomores, or whatever, were way more into the games than the Corps fish we sat behind.

Actually, from the OP, it sounds exactly like some fish smoking and joking is the issue. I don't see a "larger problem" here.

When did this start? Back in my time upperclassmen had no hesitation to correct a fish out side of their outfit (usually involved push ups) and then reported you to your upperclassmen (usually resulting in more push ups for embarrassing the unit!)

I was never lucky enough to pull anything but the third deck as a fish. Never stood on any deck as an upperclassman; was on Kyle Field, No. 11 12thMKoT.

And yes... as a fish, if you were called down by an upperclassman outside your outfit, there was hell to pay. Generally you brought your old lady along for the ride.

I'm pretty sure it's because non-regs who are at the game actually want to be there and are not required to be. When I was in, there seemed to be a ton of Cadets who didn't care about football and could care less about standing through a game.

in the real military 18 year old kids generally always have baby sitters. They're called NCOs, and a good NCO wouldn't be allowing the kind of BS that OP is pissed about.

As I recall it was a pisshead privilege to "supervise" the fish... and if they could not handle it, they could be relieved by demerits too??

I can easily see this block from my overhead seats the southwest corner. The vast majority in the Lamar game had no clue what to do during the national anthem....the flagpoles are above and to their right but most were staying uncovered and standing at attention facing forward. During the Rice game they were all covered and saluting but some on the left side were facing the field....it was slightly amusing to watch some of their buddies trying to correct them. All part of the leaninng process...I remember being a clueless fish.

I remember my first day of classes as a fish. My old lady and I were walking down the quad, and a Major walked by. I had no clue what a major was, I probably just assumed he was an old looking senior or something. I got a pretty good chewing out from a PH for that one.

Good grief these 18 year olds have been in the Corps for less than a month at two football games. If you can remember back that far, game days are pretty busy for the Corps and especially the fish. They probably need some time to relax and have fun. And yes there are a lot of cadets that don't care about football and don't even understand the game. Mine was one of those. Were they doing anything that was an embarrassment to the university or the Corps? If not let it go.

I'd say farting around during Spirit and being clueless in uniform during the National Anthem is pretty damn embarrassing.

However, I don't blame the fish. I blame their leadership, from their pHeads to Corps Staff. Their heads for not telling them how to act and teaching them the barest bit of military courtesy, to Staff for failing to assign a few upperclassman over there.

exactly.

it's been a month and they've only been to a couple games. I honestly wouldn't expect them to act much better. What i would expect is their handlers to do a better job in teaching and wrangling them.

Even though it was 26 years ago, I remember it vividly. The time for fish to relax and have fun is AFTER the 12th Man cheers the Fightin' Texas Aggie Football Team on to victory. By the way, in my era, starting your fish year 0-3 on the road == NO FUN.

For the record, in 1982 there was not a Corps block of of seats. You sat where your tickets were pulled, mainly the third deck. You may have been lucky to get first deck or second deck but that was rare. If you did, you were assured of a come by or sh8t list because you were going to pull out and you were going to get caught.

I saluted an officer my first week of class, and because I was proud I just learned my ranks I said "Good Morning Captain" to an 0-3. He was Navy, and he chewed me out himself.

The funnier thing was that the custodial crew at A&M in my day wore maroon uniforms that looked vaguely military. Imagine the 1960s service station attendant, in maroon.

it was not unusual to see a confused fish either saluting or whiling out to the janitors.

In the spring of 1984, when there were a lot of visiting officers from other countries visiting TAMU one week, we told our fish (Class of '87) to play it safe and just salute anyone in a uniform. Found out later that one of them (later to retire from the AF as an 06 navigator or something) saluted the postman.

He and his buddies know who he is and I hope he's reading this.....

We had a short female Navy Lt.Commander attached to the Trigon. She would walk through campus and after passing her not seeing her, you would hear "Howdy Admiral". THREE times that happened to me. And with the the female navy uniform, I had no clue what she was at that time. Had to be '83 or '84 time period.

I understood Army, Air Force, and Marine officer rank insignia even in high school. Navy was a different story. I was a new fish, maybe a month into the first semester. My brother came up for a football game. We were walking to Duncan (didn't March to chow on weekends) when we passed a guy in a white ice cream uniform. Just to be safe, I saluted him. It was a cadet from the Maritime Academy (now A&M Galveston). He was as flustered as I was.

A few of my D&C zips my freshman year were talking about only saluting officers that held the rank they wore as cadets or equivalent (they were cadet captains). I wish they would have actually done it so I could see the results.

We were always told that NO ONE was allowed to break the ranks of the Aggie Band.

We were formed up on the quad before march in one Saturday morning and I happen to be in the 7th rank. That means I'm standing next to the grass where family and friends stand.

Some marine corps captain decided he needed to inspect the band and sure enough he walks right in front of me. So I step forward, trumpet in hand, and stop him.

He proceeds to tell me he can go anywhere he wants to go, blah, blah, blah. I tell him no one is allowed in the band ranks.

So now he is really mad and tells me to salute him, and I tell him that we aren't supposed to salute with instruments.

At this time I realize that I'd better salute him and let him go on his way.

The band commander at the time was a marine contract, and he came over to ask why I stopped the officer. I told him I did what you had told us.

When President Bush came to campus to speak at May 1989 Graduation we took about half the band to welcome the President when he arrived at Easterwood. They made a point to tell us that the Secret Service guys were allowed to break our ranks and that we were to answer any questions they asked us with the real answer, not one of the four fish answers.

I don't recall the year, but one year FDT did a half-time performance and the two units most likely to knock you on your rear if you break their ranks passed through each other as one marched off and the other on. I think it was in the 70's.
