This is a pretty neat idea.

After His Father's Death, He Created Something That Saves Lives Daily

quote:
Massound Hassani, grew up in Kabul Afghanistan.
Afghanistan as you can imagine is a massive desert. He and his brother would make wind powered toys to pass the time in the desert.
Now Massound is an adult. He ended up catching a lucky break and was able to move to the Netherlands where he received his education. Now he is a designer.
The multiple armies that have invaded Afghanistan over the decades placed thousands of land mines around Kabul. Everyone in Kabul has been touch in some way by the devastating power of a land mine.
Masound has taken what he learned as a child to devise mine detecting tumbleweed. These tumbleweeds are inexpensive and use innovative materials to help people clear mine fields.
They are large tumbleweeds with bamboo for legs. The devices are light enough to be moved by the wind, but still have enough weight to set off a mine.
He calls his invention, the Mine Kafon.

How about have all the hajjis walk as if in "police call" formation across all their land.

Inch Allah and all that crap, they'll be fine.

I get the feeling whoever wrote this article has never been to Afghanistan and that this designer has only been to part of Afghanistan (and probably not Kabul).

So it rolls around on random paths and blows up random mines? How do you tell what has been cleared and what has not?

They cost about 40 euros each, so you could release hundreds or thousands of them. I was thinking you could mount them way out in front of a tractor and clear out a 16 foot section at a time just like plowing a field.

If you have a tractor then it kind of defeats the purpose of the tumble weeds. It's a silly idea.

Every time I see this thread title I read "Lost cow" instead of "low cost." I was expecting something else the first time I clicked it.

This probably wouldn't work in Afghanistan, but something really cool is a guy genetically engineered a plant that responds to certain chemical compounds that landmines leach out into the soil. So you spread the seeds out over an area, wait for them to grow, and look for the plants with the different leaves. .

It wouldn't work because after the first release they would grab the ones that are left, pull them apart and use the parts for something random and leave the mine fields to kill people.
