Buying boots for the mascot corporal

After the mascot corporal went viral on the internet for a great block on the SMU wide receiver, the Commandant has decided to personally buy his senior boots.

I may be the dissenting minority here, but I think that is too much. The cadet did his job. I won't try to understate the selflessness and good bull here. However, I think a pat on the back and some junior privileges would be adequate. The kid is already going to reap plenty of social rewards (as if mascot corporal didn't yield enough attention).

I don't like over-celebrating. I'm also the guy that says my 9 year old shouldn't get a trophy for soccer if they go 2-6 and finish in last place in rec league.

So, what say you? Good bull, or too much?

And BGR...good on you. I would just like to know if others share my opinion.

It's not just about rewarding the cadet. It's a tangible gift that makes for great PR; outside of the Corps, people wouldn't know what to think of JPs. It's also a great way for the Commandant to connect with the cadets.

SMU WR missed a catch and his momentum took him right toward Rev. Corporal stepped in the way and body checked him out of the way.

Awesome, selfless block; good bull and I hope he commissions to lead others in the future. He certainly deserves recognition but I don't know if buying his boots is quite necessary. Still, that's not his choice and if Gen. Ramirez thinks it's warranted then so be it. Today's Corps could use a positive example of being redass.

It's the commandants money, it's his choice. I think it's not at all necessary but it's kinda cool. I guarantee 10 years from now cadets will tell the story of the time the commandant bought a cadets boots and nobody will believe it.

I have bought boots for a cadet just as many other people have in the past and the present. Doesn't matter why or if it was deserving! I believe it is a nice gesture on the Cmdt's part. I have enjoyed watching the video over and over and I'm glad that someone is buying this kid his boots!

I wasn't in the corps, biggest regret I have in college because I attended OCS after graduation.

Anyhow, my Grandfather class of '58 and I went to a class reunion of his and I noticed he was speaking with someone about buying boots for a less than fortunate cadet. Come to find out he's been doing this for 35 years and has told no one.

I asked if I could contribute half with him and he ok'd it but like I said, not being in the corps is my biggest collegiate regret.

I would have happily contributed to a fund for buying the handler his boots, or ring or steak dinner. Wish they had taken up a collection. May the next Miss Rev have as dedicated handlers, as well.

My husband points out that the player should be thanking the handler for saving his life.

He is using his own money to recognize what he saw as good bull. That is all I need to know.

He showed good form and more importantly, a high degree of professionalism. I like the way he shrugged off the block and had the stance of "not here."

Although I served in the Army, I have no idea about the protocol for things like buying boots or whatnot. One thing I do recall is that if the commanding officer wants to do something (like buy this young man's boots - must be something symbolic for a big deal to be made of it), then it's a good idea to follow his lead, with vigor.

I can agree with you OP, I thought it was a bit overboard. But I'm also with most people here, rewarding good bull is always awesome! His money, his decision.

One thing I find interesting, and this is completely hearsay, is that there was talk of taking Rev away from E2 since they were not integrated. I was told this by a former member of E2, I was not in the corps and have not been keeping up with it, so if it is wrong, I apologize. But I only say it to point out that not all members of the Corps would have made such a sacrifice for Miss Rev as this cadet did. Something to think about.

All the positive media attention the Corps is getting as a result of what happened makes the Commandant's expenditure a very worthy investment in the Corps.

No kidding. This kid has probably gotten the Corps ten's of thousands of dollars of media exposure, and media exposure that is hard to buy in the first place (like an interview on Fox & Friends). I don't think he necessarily deserved such a big reward for doing his job, but I don't think there's anything wrong with it. And if you look at it from an investment point of view, it was definitely worth it.

I have a feeling that it's highly unlikely. The blowback on that would be fairly significant. E-2 has a pretty powerful alumni base, plus the rest of the former Corps members would not support the move.

I've been hearing this rumor for almost 10 years now. First off, I'm pretty sure no other outfit even wants that dog. But also, like you pointed out, E2 and E2 alumns would throw a fit. Plus, it just doesn't make sense - there's a lot of pass down knowledge and information that goes into handling Rev. You instantly cut that off if you move her around - it would be like picking new yell leaders without the new ones having ever met the old ones. They could figure out a lot of things, but the nuances of how to do stuff would have to be figured out the hard way.

Wow I had no idea he made it to Fox&Friends. That is awesome! Definitely gets the Corps into the limelight!

The Commandant also announced during another TV interview that an anon individual has offered to buy the kids Sr ring.
The amount of positive PR generated by this is surreal. I have been getting calls from all over the country asking about Rev, the Corp, various traditions and offering universal praise for the way this has played out. The boots and the ring , while many could say are overboard for just doing his job, are kind of like most indivual rewards and recognitions. They are symbols to be shared and admired by the many and used as an inspiration.
I have not seen this much positive attention for our old Land Grant College since the Alabama win a few years ago. Def Good Bull.

Another by-product of the publicity was a donation to the Corps boot loan program by a former student who was unaware of what boots cost today.

I was a recipient of a boot loan. It's a great program. How can I make a contribution?

If you are interested in donating call Cathy McWhorter in the Corps Center. She is a terrific resource.
