"Functional fitness" is what your average crossfitter will tell you. They say that in real life, if you've ever got to do a pullup you probably don't care about form (example would be like hanging off a cliff maybe), so you should learn how to get yourself over the bar.

Kipping during pullups is like using that pullup machine that supports part of your body weight while you do it. It's not a real pullup.

Any real life situation that requires you to pull yourself up would probably only require you to do so once, not over and over again. I think doing pull ups with full extension and without momentum would build more strength to pull yourself up in a real situation.
