I want to restore my dads WWII footlocker. He painted it over years ago and we have been able to strip his paint off but very little of the Army paint remains. We can see US ARMY still on th top but thats it. I kind of remember his name and perhaps serial number on it from seeing it as a kid but not sure.
Does anyone know exaclt what was stenciled on a WWII Army ( paratrooper Pacific theater ) footlocker ?

Name rank and serial no perhaps ?
thanks guys , I also asked on the History board but there are probably more experts here.

We have a couple in storage here. Most are from Sgt. Maj and O-6 and above so I would discount the stenciling they used as they probably had a bit more leeway in what they put on their foot lockers. I will see if we have any with regular labeling on them. I am not sure about the rank being included for lower enlisted.

SSN was not used as a service serial number until about 1970 or so. My original # was AF187****7

According to http://www.serviceofsupply.com/ReproPersonalItems.htm

quote:

The typical US Army system in the 1940s had soldiers using their full names and numbers on footlockers, and an abbreviated number on equipment, such as the last initial, and the last four digits of the number, i.e. D-8895.
