Looking for a little help out there Ags on behalf of an 87 YOA friend of mine, Robert Parrott, who was severely beaten a couple of days ago at an assisted care facility in Houston (A Touch of Home). He is a WWII Navy Vet and Korean War wounded Army Vet; he is basically destitute having to live on what little he gets from SSA and some VA benefits. I had lost contact with him last year when he was put into the facility; his family was also looking for him and (luckily) found him that day.
Here is his daughter's story as she shared with me:
quote:
It took me a couple of months to find him and when I did he was at deaths door. I have attached pictures that I took the day I brought him home.
I hope you can assist me in holding the assisted living facility( A Touch of Home), accountable for the condition he was in.
Robert was beaten by another resident who was neither elderly or disabled, more like a homeless junkie.
I took him to the VA but they sent him home and gave him an appointment for December 9,2014, they said he was fine after being seen by the Doctor.
His condition worsened so I took him to Providence Hospital in Waco.
They kept him for three days, his kidneys were shutting down and he had to have a blood transfusion, he had a serious amount of infection in his blood.
The Doctor said he had less than twenty four hours to live had he not gotten to them when he did.
Robert is incontinent both bowl and bladder and has to be bathed and changed. He cannot do those things by his self. I have filed for aid and attendant and additional disability for Robert and have asked that he be re-evaluated for total disability. We are paying a lady for home health care out of our pockets for 20 hours a week but I really need more hours for her, just cant afford it.

She took him to her home in Lorena (just south of Waco) to care for him. I plan to visit with them next week to see what is going on. We have several pictures that she took of him when she picked him up - they are simply too gruesome to post here with dignity. I asked about his vintage-correct uniforms that I had put together for him around 10years ago at a cost of over $500 - they, too, were damaged while at the facility - his pants were cut off between the ankle and knee; the remainer are in poor shape as well.
They could use some pro bono legal help if anyone is willing to do so. Please contact me directly at 713 dash 922 dash 9249 or at leeroy dot lance at gmail dot com and we can go from there. I have her contact info and can share the photos with attorney and/or Houston Area investigator (not sure if HPD was ever contacted to file a report at this time or not).

This is cross posted on the Aggies Only forum as well.

Sorry for delay in updating this post but it's been a hectic week here. I finally got to visit with Robert and his family near Waco to get more info, then I contacted a fellow veteran who happens to be a Houston PD Captain. Things are moving along now. Here's the story:
Robert was approached by a younger (approx. 50YOA) black male resident of the assisted care facility on about 13OCT. The man wanted $20; Robert refused. The next day, the man demanded the money again. When Robert refused again, the man hit him across the back of his neck, knocking Robert to the ground. As Robert got up, the man hit him across the forehead with some sort of stick. That blow fractured Robert's skull along a line above and parallel to his eyebrows. The man continued the attack as Robert lay on the ground by hitting him with the stick and kicking him. The attack broke Robert's nose and injured his cheekbone and orbital socket.
Robert's stepdaughter and her husband found Robert on 15OCT at the facility. He was battered and bruised and sitting in a thoroughly soiled adult diaper. They took him from the facility after a short confrontation with the owner/operator once they threatened to call the police, they were allowed to retrieve Robert's few possessions and take him to their house.
Once at their house, his stepdaughter and her husband took photos of him (which cannot be posted here due to their graphic nature). They cleaned him up, got a wheelchair for him and began trying to treat him for his injuries. He was also suffering from severe malnutrition and dehydration. Robert described the meals at the facility as being cereal and something that looked/smelled like dog food!
The next day, they took Robert to the VA Clinic in Waco for treatment. The clinic personnel took x-rays and did labs, then sent him home with an appointment for 09DEC!
The following day, because Robert was still in decline despite their best efforts, they took him back to the VA. The nurse there finally got a doctor to look at Robert. He confirmed the broken skull and nose and his general condition. He also said that Robert's kidneys had been shutting down for some time now according to his records and sent him home with a prescription for Tramadol (a very light pain med).
Two days later, they took Robert back to the VA and were basically told to come back at his scheduled appointment date. So, they went straight to Providence Hospital because Robert's blood pressure was bottoming out and he was dizzy. The emergency crew at the hospital went to work on him at a furious pace. After evaluating his condition, they admitted him and he spent the next four days there. The attending physician told his stepdaughter that had they not gotten him there when they did, he would not have survived the night! They had given him a transfusion of at least one unit of blood and piggy-backed 2 antibiotic bags on his saline drip. It seems that Robert was suffering from a massive blood and urinary infection, as well as his kidney problems.
He is currently at home with his stepchildren and they are treating him as best as they can. They have hired a lady to come in a few hours a day to help with him as he cannot walk yet and continues with incontinence problems. They are feeding him not only regular food and drinks, but also large amounts of protein drinks such as Ensure Plus. He really has done a big turnaround.
In the meantime, I contacted a fellow Navy veteran who is an HPD Captain and there are now two investigations underway one against the assailant for "Assault on an Elderly Person" and one against the facility for "Abuse of Elderly". I have also given the kids info as to how to apply for special VA Pension Aid and Assistance money to help offset the cost of in-home care. Things are looking up!
