I visited family in North Carolina over the holidays. One of the special parts of the trip was being able to visit Airborne and Special Ops Museum in Fayetteville. The exhibit takes you through the entire history of the Airborne and Special Ops from WW2 to our current wars with some detail.
Every so often, they have a special exhibit about something really specific. When I went it was about the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu. Of particular interest to me was the reaction of military to the media portrayal of the Battle. Particularly how the much of the heroism was ignored by the movie Black Hawk Down.
Everything in the museum is free except a simulator ride that gives you some of the experience of jumping out of planes and helicopters. It was pretty good.
If you go, talk to some of people who work there. They are all volunteers who are veterans themselves. I got the good fortune of talking to a two WW2 vets for a bit. They happily shared some of their experiences!
If you're in central North Carolina and have some appreciation for the military and history, I definitely recommend taking a day trip to this museum!
