Which outfit in the band is considered the toughest? I really want to be in the band but I also enjoy being physically and mentally challenged and I want to join and outfit that is focused around this.

I wasn't in the band, but it would surprise me if there was more than a negligible difference between the outfits. Just join whatever outfit you like the most, and then join something like Recon/Seal Platoon in the spring.

Figure out which one makes the best grades, join it, then take bigtruckguy3500's advice.

The White Band.

Oh, wait. My bad.
Still the most red-ass outfit ever.

If you really want a physical and mental challenge, join the Fish Drill Team, regardless of what unit you decide to be in.

I'm not in the band so take my advice with a grain of salt.. But A-CO has produced leaders all over the quad the past couple years. I would assume that their fish year is fairly strenuous which lead to them being successful in producing leaders, so my advice would be them.

The obvious answer is B-Company Street Fighters of course. </EOT>

The real answer is - it changes from year to year and recently they have expanded the band from 4 super large outfits to 6 large outfits. So there's more opportunity than ever to shape your own future.

You're going to get out of the Band and the Corps, whatever you and your buddies put into it and whatever your upperclassmen drive you to do which is impossible to know until it happens. I hate running and I got put into an outfit that prided themselves on the fact they were usually the Band representative to Corps Bloody Cross (six laps around the quad in formation). You'll be amazed at what you can accomplish when properly motivated. Even though I was always terrible at the Army 2-mile PT Test run, I got to where running 3 miles in formation was no big deal. Remember, your upperclassmen are still developing and growing as leaders themselves so there might be a few miscues and learning experiences here and there.

Lastly, if you feel like you're not getting driven hard enough in the band, there are other activities available on the quad that you can participate in. I did Rudder's Rangers for example because I planned to be a career Army Officer. One of my buddies who is a career Army Officer did Ranger Challenge. At the time, he was the only BQ doing Ranger Challenge. I have heard a rumor that now there is even an opportunity for BQ fish to participate in Fish Drill Team. I don't know how you could possibly have enough time for that but... the challenge is there if you want it.

No matter what happens down the road, you'll always have those 4 years that you did something that not a lot of folks get to do. Even if you wind up in Artillery Band it will still be worthwhile. Ironically, 20+ years after college, my buddy who I get along best with and is probably my closest friend wasn't one of my B-Co buddies but a buddy from B-Battery (the ones who claimed their "Hell Week" was fun).

The Corps of Cadets will look great on your resume. The Corps plus high grades will be even better. The extracurricular Corps activities will further enhance your resume. Might vote is grades first, optional activities second. Good Luck!

B-Company my first 3 years. Charlie Company my zip year (I was in the very first C-Company when it was originally formed. Class of '83).

All of the Band outfits are going to stress grades so it's not really gonna matter which one you choose. If you're a good student you're going to get good grades regardless of what outfit you choose. With that being said, B-Company will be the most physically and mentally challenging.

I was in Charlie Battery, as the last fish class, until it was reconstituted a couple years ago. My sophomore year we were rolled into B Battery. Charlie Battery and Charlie Company were disbanded due to the lack of personnel in the FTAB. I love my B Battery buddies, but if I would have had my way, Charlie Battery would have never gone away.

None of them are soft and my class year was especially strong across all four outfits...but A-Battery is the obvious answer to the OP's question.

If this kid wants a challenge he should join special units outside of the band. FDT, Rudders, Ranger Challenge, Seals. Join the outfit that has a personality that matches yours. I like working my ass of and drinking beer i joined B-Batt

No issue here. B Company had a GREAT Fall semester - the best semester they've had in a while. Good grades, good retention, and still made it challenging but rewarding for the fish. AND stayed out of trouble. I'm proud of the Streetfighters, and glad that they feel proud that their "era" is back!

From my perspective as a father of a proud B-Co fish, I'd have to give them my recommendation also. The current fish class is very cohesive, having been the last oufit to have someone punch late last semester (if reports are correct). My fish loves it overall and says they noticed a difference and took pride in the higher difficulty they had it during Corps Brass when compared to most of the other band outfits. It sounds like it should be a good group of pissheads helping train next year's fish.
