Congrats. It is smart to have it recorded at the county court house, just in case.

Get extra certified copies & put at least one in a safety deposit box. When my truck was broken in to all they took was my briefcase w/my DD 214 inside. Luckily I had extra copies at home & at the bank.

Otherwise GREAT NEWS

Just in case what?

Edit to add: I got my DD214 in 1973 after two years in the Army and am not sure what recording it would do. I didn't even know you could record it.

In case you lose it, misplace it, whatever. Recording it at the County Clerk's office means it never gets lost.

My husband lost his originals and just goes to the VA website to print more.

Good for you OP, I'm less than a year short of mine and the short timers syndrome has hit me hard. Still getting the mission accomplished but I've learned to finally put my needs first.

Could you share the site he uses to do that?

I can't find the copy I ordered 4 years ago so I just ordered another copy today. If I could access it online, that would be great.

Here's the page I used. http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/

Do people still count the days backwards when in their final year?

It seemed to be the way to do it back in the early 70s.

Not real sure about the whole year, I haven't heard the "... And a wake up" in years and that was always in reference to deployment. I've been TDA the last 3 years with a bunch of lifers but I remember Joes always counting down the days once they did the math and figured out the exact day they would sign out on terminal leave. Usually about 6-8 months out.

If you live in Texas, go to the DMV and get your veteran marker on your DL.

That's actually why I'm re-ordering my DD-214 statement.

Since I have to bring all kinds of other documentation to renew my driver's license so I can get the "I'm not an illegal alien" version, I figure I might as well go all the way. I'm even thinking about ordering up some Veteran license plates for my car that my daughter drives to college.

Thanks for your service, Rev. And I couldn't agree more with those who recommended that you get your DD 214 recorded at the County Court House. After being retired for 3 years, I did just that last year. Serious peace of mind with doing that, They even made multiple copies for me so I could have copies in multiple locations just in case. I second all that those who recommended doing so said.

Congratulations again, and thanks again for your service to our nation. I still take great pride in the number of Aggies who have served, continue to serve today, and will serve in the future. Something that truly sets us apart from the majority of schools in our country. Well done! Hooah!
