Old Trees on the Quad

Today is Arbor Day. I was told that "the trees" are being "cut down" on the Quad. I am hoping this not true - maybe some are being trimmed? Memorial trees, especially, should not just be cut down. I am trying to imagine next fall sitting at a Corps BBQ with no shade, formation with no shade, Bloody Cross with no shade - it does not make much sense. Can someone please post a photo of what is being done? Even when the MSC was renovated, they saved as many trees as they could, mostly because people complained.

I know that there's a masterplan for the redevelopment of the quad that fixes drainage, landscaping, etc. When you go through all that, you'll probably end up slicing through the roots of those trees that are pretty mature - been there for 50+ years, so there's a good chance they'll die anyway.

I guess they'll save some of the 'not so mature' ones, but at one time, all those old trees were young.

Not saying it's ideal, but it's a realistic approach.

BTW - which ones are 'memorials'?

I found the Corps District Plan. Apparently the trees are being removed so the interior part of the quad can be paved over because of "drainage". Do not personally see how this is going to improve drainage, by removing softscape and putting in hardscape.

Before I read the plan, and only heard that "the trees were being cut down on the Quad" - I thought it was all the interior trees. The part on the plan that is marked for paving is the shorter central part of the cross. I do not know if there are any memorial trees on that portion. I have been unable to find a document online of all the memorial trees on campus. There used to be a "walking tour" map that included them, but that was a very long time ago. Still looking. So far I have found info on the Drill Field trees, the Century tree, a memorial tree for VA Tech shooting victims, and one planted next to a building in the donor's wife's name. Unsure how many trees on Military Walk are memorialcommemorative trees, or on the Quad.

I would still like to know what is actually being done - I am hoping the scope is much reduced from what was presented in the document.

I'll try to answer your questions concerning the tress.

First, there are no "memorial trees" on the Quad. There are many old trees, that have been there for many years, but there are no "memorial trees" on the Quad.

Second, the Quad is undergoing a major renovation over the next 2 years, and part of that renovation will include re-doing the interior of the quad. In addition to the renovations, the university is emplacing new pipes down the center of the Quad to bring hot/cold water and fiber to the dorms on the Quad. These pipes will replace pipes that are over 70 years old and routinely break now. Once all the new pipes are in place, the old steam tunnels are going to be collapsed and filled in.

Prior to all of the renovations being started, the university Arborist was brought in to determine which trees would survive the work being done to the interior of the Quad, and which ones wouldn't. It was HE who determined which trees were either already dead (and many were) or would not survive the work being done in the interior of the Quad. As a result, those trees deemed already dead or unlikely to survive the renovations are going to be cut down. Some have already been cut down, and there are more to follow.

What may not be known, however, is that new trees will be planted to replace those that are cut down. For every tree cut down, at least one, if not more, trees will be planted to replace it. So when the renovations are complete, there will be a row of new trees - and some old trees that survive - down the center of the Quad. After all is said and done, the Quad will have MORE trees in the interior than we had before.

By the start of the 2017-2018 school year, the entire Quad should be completely renovated, including all 12 dorms completely renovated, 4 Leadership Learning Centers built (2 already exist - Buzbee and Ash), and the interior of the Quad completely re-done, including new paving similar to what you now see at Military Walk, as well as new benches, new lighting, new landscaping, and yes, new trees.

I hope this helps answer your questions. If you have further concerns, please feel free to call the Office of the Commandant and I'll be happy to discuss with you. Thanks for your support of our Corps.

End of an era.

You could probably make money by salvaging and selling all the grafitti down there. I'd come look for some of mine if I remembered where it was.

Before that happens, would a historian be allowed to go down and document the artwork and graffiti in the tunnels. I would gladly volunteer to work or that project!

Definitely should happen in my opinion. Maybe not all the graffiti, but I'm sure there's some interesting stuff down there that could be of historical significance for some outfits/special units.

Also, wasn't there a plan to pave over the entire quad? Or was that just an artist's rendition that never came to fruition? I'm very glad that's not happening. Hopefully with the improved drainage the elephant ears won't turn into mud pits every time cadets go out there to play after the rain.

I will talk to Facilities Maintenance this week and see if we can find a way to get into the tunnels and at least video whats down there, if not bring some old "artifacts" out for all to enjoy as part of the history of the Corps. I can't promise they'll let us, but its worth asking. I'll keep you all posted.

And yes, we are paving over the "elephant ears," for a lot of reasons, to include major drainage issues that have plagued those areas for years. Trees will still be planted around the paved over elephant ears, but all the current dirt there will be paved over with pavers similar to Military Walk.

Again, I will keep you posted on whether we will be allowed to go into the steam tunnels one last time before they are collapsed.

Thanks for your support of our Corps! Gig 'em!

How about the memorial benches on the quad? We had a memorial bench put in a while ago after my veteran Grandfather passed.

No worries about the memorial benches - they will all be replaced, along with their markers, once the renovations to the Quad are complete.

Instead of the concrete "coffin-looking" benches we have now, they will be replaced with metal benches similar to the ones found on Military Walk. They may not all be located in the same spot as before, but they will be replaced back on the Quad, along with their markers.

Just so you know, the statue of "Danger 79," LTG Hollingsworth, will also be re-located to the north end of the Quad, right inside the arches on the grass. As one enters the Quad through the arches, the first thing they will see is the statue of "Danger 79."

Hope this answers your question. Thanks for your support of our Corps. Gig 'em!

The Commandant probably remembers the good old days, when we had plenty of "fiber" in the Quad dorms. Just drink a cup of that Duncan Dope, and "trot"(rather quickly) toward the dorm!

Charge for tours of the steam tunnels before they go away to raise some cash. Just have people wear a hard hat and sign a waiver.

A lot of the live oak trees on the Quad are nearing the end of their life cycles anyway.... the same problem has existed over on the Academic Quadrangle also. If you take a walk from Cushing west past Academic to the Flagpole, you can see how many of the old trees have already been removed and replaced by new ones. Same goes for the Simpson Drill Field.

It's always been interesting to see pictures of the Quad when it was first completed in 1939.... not many trees at all, and what there were, were pretty small. Even with soggy elephant ears and cracked-up sidewalks, the existing trees have added a lot of shade and softness to our home for many a decade.

Not much we can do about it.... except replant, of course. Nothing lives forever.

As a follow-up, we have gotten permission from the facilities folks to go into the steam tunnels sometime this summer (before they collapse the steam tunnels sometime next Fall) to video the graffiti and other items down there, and possibly bring out any "artifacts" we might find down there.

I will post when we finalize the date that we are going to go down into the steam tunnels, but I wanted to update those who are interested on the fact that we have gotten permission to do so.

I will do my best not to take video or photos of any "incriminating" evidence down there, but can't make any promises. Some of you may want to "come clean" ahead of time...

Joe,

You might want to use your position sometime to gain access and wander around the Academic Building. In the space between the inner and outer domes is a ton of graffiti, some of it now approaching 100 years old.

Your steam tunnel team might be interested in documenting that, as well.

And a Ryan said, you ought to sell spaces on your steam tunnel excursions to raise money for the CCA.

Not exactly true; there is at least one live oak that has been on campus for over a century.

Where and how did you come up with this statement....most live oaks have a life span of 100 to 300 years old but there are many examples of threes that are 500 to in the thousands of year old...

I'm not an authority on trees by any stretch, and will gladly defer to any experts on this board. But, a number of the trees in the Academic Quad that are now gone, or are visibly on the decline, were obviously planted (given their position relating to buildings, lining sidewalks, etc) when that quad and those buildings were being built. A number of them are still going strong it seems..... others might be closing in on that 100-year mark on your life cycle. The Academic Quadrangle traces it's development back to the beginning of the 20th century, even before the Academic Bldg was built (1915).

Many of the trees we're losing might very well be trees that are at the younger end of the life cycle (100 yrs) you cite..... we obviously have many on campus that are much older also, the Century Tree being the most famous, but not only, example.

Concur on the expedition up on the Academic Building to check out the graffiti in the dome space. 1st hand experience on that one. How we got up there is another story for another day. Trust me.

Glad I'm an old, dead zip. All that concrete, instead of the dirt and grass will be hot as hell and miserable for PT/ sports. But it'll look better to donors and the parents of potential new cadets, so that's the priority

I recommend a combination of pictures and video for the steam tunnel exploration. I think a GoPro would be great. I'm sure there are some cadets with some that would be happy to volunteer to go down there.

Although...Some former cadets could probably navigate them better...
