Anyone have any insight into what will be the plan for our field gun this fall? I seem to recall seeing something about a special place being in the works for it in the new west side and after last year's unsatisfactory start in this area, and was curious if a good solution was reached and what that might be.

I think the location in the southwest tunnel used in the last couple of games worked well but that might not be the best long term solution for safe but loud firings.

No changes from the solution we finally worked out at the end of last season for the cannon. It will be in the SW tunnel this season, just as it was for the last few games last season. There are NO plans to change that for this season.

Thanks for the clarification, General. I'm happy to hear that and I know many others will be happy to hear and feel the strong report of the cannon from that location many times per game!

I'm happy about it too! Hope it gets to fire a LOT this season! Whoop!

Who here knows the oddly appropriate story of how PMC came to acquire its "field" gun?

Seems the story may not be quite as related in the video. Very few M1902's were taken to Europe during WWI, mostly they were used for training here and the Army used French artillery in combat. Also, PMC's gun may not have been abandoned by the Army but was perhaps one of several training pieces hidden by the Corps around WWII so they wouldn't be scrapped. If true, I think this version makes the story even more interesting and begs the question of where are the other hidden guns. Maybe apply a hand-held metal detector along the same ditch that '02 was found in and ask some really old Ags to do a memory check?

There were actually two field pieces that were around the same spot. My dad ran across them in 64 or 65 while trying to shoot squirrels and a gentleman I ran into in south Texas had also seen both field pieces a few years after that.

I would bet that it is likely that there is more artillery and possibly ordinance hidden west of campus.

Could your Dad be more specific where he last saw the guns? Maybe mark a map as best he could?

I suspect an hour walking with a rented metal detector along the same ditch in which the first gun was found might well result in the Corps someday parading an imposing and extremely rare full artillery section instead of just a half-section.

I bet a bunch of folks with OWNED metal detectors (myself included) would be willing to aid in detecting for something like this. To be apart of something that may result in historical pieces that generations will admire and connect with would be awesome.

Take another look at the video I posted above. I bet if you used the Aggie Network to contact Bill Edgerton '76 (it has his phone and email) who found the first gun, or the video's narrator who assisted in bringing it back to the Quad, or even oldord's Dad (above), one of them would have a good idea where to search. Go for it......

Great show by the best cannon in college football last night for Ball State and cool tribute to Bob Byrns and his leadership to PMC!
