I know this was discussed several years ago but I think it is worth taking a second look.

The reason, as I understand it, the Cav doesn't come in with the rest of the Corps is the fear of one or more of the horses becoming spooked by the Band. This makes sense, since no one wants to see a horse throw a rider.

However, if the Cav was the last unit to come in with the Corps, the Band could still mute the music just as it does now. I also know horses/mules can be trained to accept noise and not have a control problem in that type of environment. Mounted law enforcement units work in much tougher environments than anything we have at Kyle Field. The visiting crowd and band could be asked not to do anything so as not to spook the horses. Texas Tech seems to have mastered any crowd problem with their Mask Rider. They have no problems.

The last two elements of the Cav would be the cannon and the supply wagon, which could be left in the "out ramp" for the game. The horses could be assembled at the loading area outside the stadium in a Picket Line with their riders and then loaded after the game starts and the crowd is the stadium. Very impressive to see a straight line of riders with horses. The Cav, for safety reasons, would post guards (Pickets), to keep fans from getting too close to the horses.

People and especially children like to see horses. This would also give the Cav more face time which I am sure they would appreciate. The Cav is a big positive to our Corps.

I am sure we have some excellent horsemen in the CS area who could help establish the training program--we might have some already on staff.

I think it is worth a look. What do you think?

never had an issue when the Cav rode into Kyle Field for reviews and the Band played back in the 80's.

We just played more softly or just had a drum cadence as they rode around the track.

The Corps is bigger and takes longer to walk through.

I'm not sure what you are referring to!?? At least for the past 9 years that I have been at Kyle Field the Cav marches in Kyle Field after the band and before the Corps. Pregame the horses are fenced at Spence Park for the tots to pet and take pics! Are you talking about step off?

Check out the Parsons Mounted Cavalry Facebook page and you will see that they do lots of training.

As a brand new BQ fish in 1973, we went out and played as the brand new Cav rode around their training grounds. Most of the horses were straight off the ranch, so it was a bit of a rodeo, as I recall.

I believe the crowd/noise training is a bit more sophisticated now.

I can speak with authority to the last four years in Kyle Field. I have had a row 1 or 2 seat during these years -
Band marches in and takes seats
PMC rides in
PMC exits.
Corps Staff, followed by balance of Corps marches in.

For 1989-1993, the Cav rode in last, unhitched the mules and dropped the ambulance, unhitched the hroses from the limber, unhitched the field gun from the limber, and placed neck of limber and ambulance on concrete in south end zone.

I too understand it to be a safety issue. This is more present that in the 80s/90s. We would drill without protective headgear. How you will see the Cav practicing in helmets.

I am talking about the PMC being a part of the regular March-In and not separate from the Corps.

Exactly the reason the PMC should March-In with the rest of the Corps.

We did a lot of things different back then.
