It was pretty cool.

He is a big loss for the service. Dunford is a great replacement as CJCS, though.

Outstanding! Glad to see someone in the Army still wears wheel hats versus those cheesy berets!

I got to meet GEN Dempsey when I was stationed in Baumholder, Germany and he was USAREUR commander. He was the Distinguished Speaker at our ENG BN ball. After his speech, he started singing an Irish drinking song called "THE WILD ROVER." He received a standing ovation and then proceeded to head to the bar. When he heard me order a Glenlivit and a Jameson's, he asked if I was Scottish or Irish by heritage. I told him I was both and that the Glenlivit was for my wife and the Jameson's was for me. He proceeded to say it was his pleasure to buy a round for someone with an ancestry similar to his. After paying for mine and my wife's drinks, he told me to enjoy my evening and the rest of my time in Germany. GEN Martin Dempsey is a hell of guy, and was a great General in my humble opinion. He is also the highest ranking officer who ever bought me a drink.

He was my first battalion commander in the "Bandits" -- then 4-67 Armor in Friedberg, Germany, from 92-93.

The Wild Rover was the unofficial battalion song, and the group singing was the highlight of every unit function. That organization was what kept me in the Army,

He will be missed.
