Today, the United States Navy says goodbye to a storied, battle-tested submarine in the USS Albuquerque, SSN 706. I had the good fortune of serving on her from August 1998 to November 2001.
I still remember the moment when we were crossing the Atlantic at the beginning of our Mediterranean deployment in 1999 when we received word that the Kosovo conflict had broken out. We had several liberty ports scheduled in the Med, but most were promptly cancelled, and our orders changed to immediately proceed to the Adriatic Sea to take station with the Theodore Roosevelt Battle Group to participate in Operation Noble Anvil.
Over the course of 40 straight days at sea, we fired 10 Tomahawk missiles with a 100% success rate.
