I will be doing a toast at our unit's dining out...any suggestions based on one's you've heard in the past that stuck out to you?

Dining Out as in spouses/guests present?

Who are you toasting?

TM,

That is correct...spouses present.

There is a last formal toast for which I am responsible...and it is fairly open to my discretion.

Here's to our enemies, may God turn their hearts. If he cannot turn their hearts, may he turn their ankles so we shall know them by their limp.

Ancient Scottish regimental toast: "Here's to us! Who's like us?! Damn few, and they're all dead!" (Much mangling of the original Scots wording over the centuries.)

When the evening moves on to frivolous toasts, one of the funnier ones I heard was, "Here's to the late, great Walt Disney, for without his creation of Mickey Mouse, this outfit wouldn't be possible."

Back in the mid 70s, the front line US fighter aircraft was the F-4. Both the Thunderbirds and Blue Angels were flying "Double Ugly". The decision was made to change aircraft, presumably moving to a more "fuel efficient" aircraft (thanks Jimmy Carter). The Air Force went to the T-38 advanced trainer and the Navy went to the A-4.

The Air Force Fighter Weapons School, held a Dining In or Out for their graduating class. They invited the Thunderbirds since they were also based at Nellis AFB. Naval exchange officer and Fighter Weapons School instructor, Mark Larkins '70, proposed a toast. "I'd like to propose a toast to the only armed forces flight demonstration team that flies an operational fighter..., to the Blue Angels!"

I'd recommend having a couple of different one handy just in case your first choice gets taken earlier.

King Henry St Crispain toast:

quote:
Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

If it hasn't been addressed yet, a toast aimed at family members, their support and them being the reason you are all there.

Just my .02.

Looks like I'll be using this one at the bachelor party.

Good quick toast in mixed company...

Here's to the land we love (pauses to glance down at his wife), and the love we land.
