Just have to share.

My middle son, who reported to Basic in Great Lakes, IL, 370 days ago, just found out that he passed his final exam and the rigorous, 6-month Power School program at the Navy Nuke Training Command at Goose Creek SC.

He graduates Friday morning. I'm flying out there tomorrow to see him graduate.

Coming out of A school Nuke program he made E4 (Petty Officer 3rd Class), and now is 6 months of Prototype training before joining the fleet. He is stoked and I'm one helluva proud dad.

Congrats! Over the years I have met about a dozen or so Navy Nuke guys, either current or former. Showing my age, but they all were trained in Idaho Falls, which according to wiki, stopped their training program in the mid-90s, after (according to wiki) training 40,000 Navy folks.

Of course, they were all super smart. Several of them told me that the school WAS very tough, but the staff expected everyone there to do the hard work and pass. The story they told me was that the staff told them (at least back then) that every student there was capable of passing the course or they wouldn't have been selected for it.

My dad was an AF nuclear weapons technician for over 20 years, so I've always had an interest in the subject.

Best of luck to your son. It's a great, and rewarding career field.

That nuke bonus seems really good until you see everyone else work less hours, and have more liberty.

But seriuosly, congrats.

Congratulations to your wicked smart kid!

Question: I've read that once completed, it translates to a partial completion of a Nuclear Engineering degree, how does the Navy keep these sailors? The comparable salary in the civilian world is probably 6 figures.

But still, if he likes it and does 20, he'd be entering the work force at prime earning years! With the experience, leadership, additional schools etc, he'd probably be at 175 a year in today's money. Plus, in 20 years, we'll have hopefully gotten off our asses and started building new civilian reactors too, so the demand will hopefully be even greater!

He should be playing the Timbuk 3 song daily at full blast!

Unless it's changed in the last 10 years, they don't keep them. I knew several guys who had been nukes and every one had a countdown until EAS. the Navy was offering 100K re-up bonuses and most wouldn't take it.

I wrote a very long thesis on how to keep them but realized it was way off topic.

I have to assume that these enlistees would have been accepted into 95% of all universities in the western world. Is that a fair estimate?
