Just for what its worth: I was the Deputy Cdr (ADC-M) of 2ID from 2007-2008 and lived on Camp Casey. I was single at the time, so I LIVED at Camp Casey, and didn't go to YongSan on the weekends. My hootch was right next to my HQs at Camp Casey, and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way.
I enjoyed my time in Korea, mostly because I got to spend a LOT of time with soldiers - even on the weekends. I did PT with soldiers, I went to their sporting events on the weekends (boxing smokers, football games, basketball games, wrestling matches, etc), I went to the gym with soldiers, I rode the shuttle bus with soldiers, went to the field with soldiers, and ate many meals with soldiers in the DFAC. I spent a lot of time at both Camps Casey and Hovey, and came to appreciate the units, their leaders, and their soldiers.
I know Korea has its challenges, and I can appreciate being there on a "deployed" status vs being there on a PCS status, but I'd do it all again - mainly because of the soldiers. THEY made it a very rewarding tour for me, and I will never forget that year and how much I enjoyed my time with 2ID - and the soldiers who wore "the Indianhead patch."
I hope the members of 1 ABCT, 1st Cav have as good an experience in Korea as I did. I know its different, but the mission is important, and the First Team is critical to that mission. Thanks to all of you for your service to our nation and to the citizens of Korea. I'd proudly stand beside you at Camp Casey and Camp Hovey at any time, if asked to do so. Proud of you! God bless.
First Team! Second to None! Hooah!
