Anybody have advice or tips on family living on the spec ops side of the house in the Army?

Suggestions on places to live near Fayettnam?

Things to do around North Carolina?

And just any general advice on being a junior officer is like in ARSOF.

If u r usasoc, anywhere in fayetteville is fine, the further u go out from post, the better the schools. Jack britt, pine forest, greys creek. If u r at jsoc headquarters, North fayetteville, spring Lake. If u r delta compound, moore County schools, Southern pines area. Love ft bragg but do not like fayetteville however it is your typical army town with pawn shops, stuff 18 year privates want to do but has pockets of really nice areas. Been stationed here for over 16 years ( total) ft bragg sucks u in and calls u back and never let's u go!

Oh and they are building this super highway that is going to really help getting into post that covers most of fayetteville. Can get from one side of town to the other in about 10 min instead of 45 min due to lights and traffic, said it will be open in August but they have been saying that for the past 15 months. (Also they just built an Academy and it is weird setting carolina stuff instead of Texas rangers and aggie stuff)

There was a subdivision that backed up to some woods which were on post with many jogging trails just south of Gruber and Smoke Bomb Hill. Used to see lots of SF jogging when I was jogging back there. That was 1979-1983. Can't think of the name of the subdivision. Then at that time there were newer subdivisions south towards Hope Mills I think. Southern Pines area was beautiful.

I have lived in Fayetteville for the majority of my life. You want to live in the Southern Pines area or Hope Mills (specifically the Jack Britt School District). You could also live north of post in an 801 community (on post housing that isn't on Ft. Bragg proper) called Linden Oaks. All depends on how close you want to be to RDU and how far you want to drive for work. As for things to do the beach is 2.5 hours away, the mountains are 3.5 hours away, and there is plenty of hunting, fishing around. A lot of people say they don't like Fayetteville but there are worse places to live.

Edit to say that drive time from Southern Pines area via Plank/Chicken Rd. or Manchester/Lamont/Longstreet will take you 45min on average to get to post. I don't know if you will be working on Pope, Reilly, out by McKellars, or the new barracks complex they are building so it could be longer or shorter depending.

I will be attending Civil Affairs Q-Course and ARSOF Captains Career Course. I assume that's going to be IVO JFK school house?

Yeah the schoolhouse. Spring Lake and and east and north of post. If you have kids, long hill elementary on the northside fayetteville and stoney point elementary on the south side are your best schools. Due to traffic, northside is quicker to get to then the Southside especially with the new road.

I'm in the CAQC right now and am happy to help with any specific questions you have. Lots of Ags either in or recently completed SOF CCC, most of whom I'm sure you probably know. Are you c/o '12?

Yes I am class of 2012 but Year Group 2013 because I commissioned in August of 2012 and wasn't active duty til

March 2013. I guess the questions I have now would be focused on CAAS. Not saying to G2 the course but every little bit helps!

Didn't think I would meet a bunch of Ags in that realm.

I'm a GB and just left Bragg last summer from my SWCS tour. Live in Southern Pines, Pinehurst or Whispering Pines. The extra drive time is worth it. If you just have to live in Fayetteville check out the Haymont area near downtown. It's pretty nice. Carolina Lakes and the area near Cameron is livable as well. Good luck.

I rented a house in Carolina Lakes for a few years, starting in 1987. My, how time flies. I wasn't home a lot, but it was a nice way to get away from the area.

A photographer took a pic of me and my daughters and our hound dog headed to a fishing hole one year on July 4th out in Carolina Lakes. Made the front page of the Fayetteville Observer. Due to too many moves, I've somehow lost that framed photo. Wish I could get to the Observer archives to get a copy of that, but have been unsuccessful via the internet.
