IMO, tilapia is just about the worst tasting fish there is.

Tilapia is the chicken breast of the sea. Buy better fish. It's worth it.
I've had some great dishes with chicken breast, can't say the same about tilapia, it's just the worst. 100% agree, don't go cheap on fish. I don't cook fish often but when I do I'm happy to spend the money on a nice piece of halibut, tuna, salmon, swordfish, etc.HTownAg98 said:

Great for feeding my African cichlids. No use for it otherwise.
Tilapia literally eat ***** Seriously... research it. Buy frozen pollock (cod). Healthier and generally about just as cheap.

Tilapia is a blank slate. It will absorb whatever flavors you put near it. You can season it however you like. If you need a cheap protein, it's fine. I won't say that it's good... But it's fine.

Hers's the issue with Tilapia....
They are raised in fresh water ponds in China or Indonesia, or some other Far East country.
They are bottom feeders, meaning their flesh will take on the taste of mud (due to the build up of geosmin).
Some processors, though few and far between, will place them in pens or nets just below the water surface, which prevents them from bottom feeding. They are then fed fish meal. The fillets from these fish are good to great.
Personally, I'd pass and purchase a frozen halibut filet.

It's more like the ground beef of the sea. There is good stuff, bad stuff, and it isn't ever as good as steak. It also isn't as expensive as steak. However, it is totally edible if you do it right - just don't expect it to stand on its own.
It's not from the sea at all.
It's disgusting and I don't recommend anyone ever eat it unless desperate. I can't get behind an exclusively farmed fish. Especially if not farmed here in America.
