We are building a new house and the only thing the wife is letting me contribute on is the outdoor kitchen. We were at a family friends house a few weeks ago and their porch seemed to catch all of the smoke coming out of the green egg. Outside of splurging on a vent hood does anyone have another solution to direct the smoke away from the porch?

I use a box fan when needed.

I have a friend who recently bought a house and can't use his egg because it's up against his house and next to a sliding glass door and the prevailing breeze most often will blow any smoke into his house. He can't put a vent over it and may end up putting it on a portable stand and moving it away from his house. Thankfully, when we built our house, our builder was very cognizant of these kind of issues and the prevailing SE breeze blows smoke away from the patio and the egg is set away from the house somewhat.

My father has a vent hood that works very well. His whole area is pretty enclosed. Uncle has a small fan that doesn't work well at all. I would say you would need a big box fan if you want it to blow it away from the patio. Otherwise as others have said it will get real Smokey on the patio.

That sounds accurate. I was told I am "welcome to go to HER meeting" with the designer next week

My experience is the BGE smokes quite a bit after lighting, but once coal is burning, there is very little smoke output.
