Curious if anyone else uses one? Wanted to bounce ideas and thoughts off of others. I have one and love it but still learning. I use it in my Vision Pro Kamado smoker.
This was my effort last night.

I have one for my BGEs; I have used it on MiniMax / Med / Large. Not an expert but happy to weigh in.

They are all about the same. They are all a PID controller, a fan and a temp probe.
The rest is build quality and features like battery powered and remote monitoring.

Are these needed on a Kamado style grill? I am smoking a pork butt today and my kamado has been locked in at 275F without me touching a thing for a good 6 hours now. This seems like a needless expense on these type of smokers as they dial into temp really easy.

I agree, with these style pits, the temperature can be dialed in and held easily without the flame boss system. The one thing that has made a big difference for me has been the kick ash ash catcher.

I see a pretty big temp swing between what my Flame Boss says and the temp on the Vision Kamado. The temp gauge on the Kamado is about 75 deg lower.

I like it because it really does keep my grill stable at 225 for hours. You can see the fan (green) working throughout the night while I was sleeping.

Is your smoker temp dropping because you're opening the pit?

Yes, and the Flame Boss accounts for this and gives a two minute period where the fan doesn't spike.

There can be pretty wide variation between probes, usually comes down to two factors: probe placement (grid vs. dome) and calibration (one may not be reading accurately).

And I would echo that these are definitely not needed but definite nice to have tools for peace of mind on overnight cooks or when I am away from the pit.

I have a BBQ Guru that I use when I cook brisket or pork shoulder. It's held up pretty well over the years. Don't use it for any other cooks as the Egg is easy to work with. It's good peace of mind for those overnight cooks where you want to get a good night's rest.

this is essentially what I use my flame boss for.

I'll put a brisket on my kamado joe with the controller set to 225 around 10pm and go to bed. Check the next morning around 8am and usually have an hour or 2 left to finish cooking. It stays right on temp all night.

On the other hand, once you get your vents set, the kamado stays very stable for a long time. I've done briskets overnight just as well before I got the flame boss.

Do you need it? No. For me, its some peace of mind so I don't worry about the cook.

Also, if you are doing a long cook, use the larger lumps of charcoal. The little pieces seem to smolder and smother the fire. The larger pieces allow better air flow.
